English to Kannada Typing — Roman to Kannada Script Online
Type Kannada using English phonetics. Roman-to-Kannada character mapping, ottakshara handling, government and everyday vocabulary, practice sentences, and workflow tips.
A colleague of mine in Bengaluru once described his relationship with Kannada typing as "complicated." He grew up speaking Kannada, reads it fluently, and watches Kannada movies without subtitles. But whenever he needed to type something in Kannada — a Facebook post, a government form, a message to his grandmother — he'd switch to English and hope the recipient could read Roman-script Kannada.
That changed when he discovered phonetic transliteration. Now he types "hegiddeera" and sees ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀರಾ appear on screen. Types "dhanyavaadagalu" and gets ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು. The script materialises from the sounds he already knows.
Kannada Script — The Basics
Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ) has one of the oldest scripts in South India, with inscriptions dating back to the 5th century. The modern script has 49 basic characters — 15 vowels and 34 consonants — plus a large set of conjunct characters called ottakshara (ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರ) formed when consonants combine.
What makes Kannada distinct from a typing perspective:
- Rounded letterforms that look elegant but require precise character selection
- A rich system of ottakshara (conjuncts) where subscript forms attach below base consonants
- Vowel length distinction that changes word meaning
- Retroflex consonants (ಟ, ಡ, ಣ) that need specific input patterns

Ottakshara — Kannada's Conjunct System
Ottakshara is the term for Kannada conjunct consonants — combinations formed when two or more consonants cluster without a vowel between them. In Kannada script, the second consonant typically appears as a subscript form below the first.
When typing phonetically, you handle ottakshara by simply typing the consonants in sequence. The tool recognises the cluster and forms the appropriate conjunct.
Common ottakshara combinations:
