Your phone is probably the device you type on most. WhatsApp messages, Instagram captions, Facebook posts, Google searches — all from your Android phone. And if you want to type in Hindi, your phone actually makes it easier than a computer.

Android has had excellent Hindi typing support for years. You just need to turn it on.

Three Ways to Type Hindi on Android

MethodHow It WorksBest For
TransliterationType "namaste" → नमस्तेPeople who think in Roman script
Hindi KeyboardTap Devanagari keys directlyPeople who know Devanagari layout
Voice InputSpeak Hindi → text appearsQuick messages, hands-free
Most people start with transliteration and eventually learn the Hindi keyboard for faster input. Voice typing is excellent for long messages when you are not in a quiet place — wait, actually, you need a quiet place for voice. You get the idea.

Gboard is pre-installed on most Android phones. It has the best Hindi support of any keyboard.

Setting Up Hindi on Gboard

Step 1: Open Gboard Settings
  1. Open any app with a text field (WhatsApp, Notes, etc.)
  2. Tap the text field to bring up the keyboard
  3. Tap the gear icon (⚙️) on the keyboard toolbar
  4. Or go to Settings → System → Keyboard → Gboard
Step 2: Add Hindi Language
  1. Tap LanguagesAdd Keyboard
  2. Search for "Hindi" (हिन्दी)
  3. You will see multiple options:
OptionWhat It Does
HindiFull Devanagari keyboard with Hindi layout
Hindi (Transliteration)Type in English, get Hindi output
Hindi (Phonetic)Similar to transliteration with phonetic rules
Add both "Hindi" and "Hindi (Transliteration)" — this gives you flexibility. Step 3: Switch Between Languages
  • Long-press the spacebar → language picker appears
  • Or tap the globe icon (🌐) to cycle through languages
  • Or swipe the spacebar left/right to switch

Using Gboard Transliteration

Once Hindi Transliteration is active:

  1. Type in English (Roman script)
  2. Gboard shows Hindi suggestions above the keyboard
  3. Tap the correct Hindi word
Examples:
You TypeGboard SuggestsYou Tap
namasteनमस्ते, नमस्तीनमस्ते
kaiseकैसे, कैसीकैसे
bharatभारत, भारतीभारत
shubhशुभ, शुबशुभ
kyaक्या, क्योंक्या
Pro tip: Gboard learns your typing patterns. The more you use it, the better it predicts. After a week, your most-used Hindi words will appear as the first suggestion.

Using the Devanagari Keyboard on Gboard

Switch to the Hindi (Devanagari) keyboard for direct input:

  • The layout shows Hindi characters arranged phonetically
  • Swipe down on a key to get the matra (vowel mark) version
  • Long-press for less common characters
  • The space key types a space; the । key types a Hindi full stop
Keyboard layout overview:
RowCharacters

Middleो े ् ि ु प र क त च
Bottomं म न व ल स य
This is the standard Inscript-like layout adapted for touch screens.

Gboard Hindi Glide Typing

Gboard supports swipe typing in Hindi (Devanagari keyboard mode):

  1. Place your finger on the first letter

  2. Slide to each subsequent letter without lifting

  3. Lift your finger — Gboard predicts the word

Glide typing works surprisingly well for common Hindi words. It takes a few days to get used to, but it is significantly faster than tapping individual keys.

Method 2: Microsoft SwiftKey

SwiftKey is the second most popular Android keyboard with excellent Hindi support.

Setting Up Hindi on SwiftKey

  1. Download Microsoft SwiftKey from Play Store (if not pre-installed)
  2. Open SwiftKey → Languages
  3. Search "Hindi" → Download the language pack
  4. Enable Hindi (Transliteration) and/or Hindi (Devanagari)

SwiftKey's killer feature: It can predict Hindi and English words simultaneously without switching keyboards. If you type "aaj meeting" it will suggest "आज meeting" — mixing both scripts naturally.

Setting Up Bilingual Mode in SwiftKey

  1. Go to SwiftKey → Languages
  2. Enable both English and Hindi
  3. Toggle on "Multilingual typing"
  4. Now type in either language — SwiftKey detects which one you mean

Method 3: Google Voice Typing in Hindi

Voice input is the fastest way to type Hindi on Android — if conditions are right.

How to Use Hindi Voice Input

  1. Open any text field
  2. Tap the microphone icon on your keyboard
  3. Change language to Hindi: Tap the language shown (usually "English") and select "हिन्दी"
  4. Speak clearly in Hindi
  5. Google converts your speech to Devanagari text in real-time

Voice Typing Tips

TipWhy
Speak at normal paceToo fast = missed words, too slow = awkward breaks
Say punctuation out loud"पूर्ण विराम" for ।, "प्रश्नवाचक चिह्न" for ?
Pause between sentencesGoogle uses pauses to detect sentence boundaries
Quiet environmentBackground noise kills accuracy
Hold phone near mouth15-20 cm distance is optimal

Voice Typing Accuracy

Google's Hindi voice recognition has improved dramatically:

ScenarioAccuracy
Clear Hindi, quiet room92-95%
Hindi with English words mixed85-90%
Regional accent (Bhojpuri, Marwari influence)80-88%
Noisy environment60-75%
Technical/formal Hindi85-90%
For casual WhatsApp messages, voice typing is often good enough to send without correction. For formal text, expect to fix 1-2 words per sentence.

Setting Hindi as Default Keyboard Language

If you type in Hindi more than English:

On Gboard

  1. Gboard Settings → Languages
  2. Long-press "Hindi" and drag it to the top of the list
  3. Hindi is now your default — English becomes secondary

On SwiftKey

  1. SwiftKey Settings → Languages
  2. Tap the star icon next to Hindi to make it primary
  3. SwiftKey will default to Hindi predictions

Hindi Typing Tips for Specific Apps

WhatsApp

  • Gboard transliteration works seamlessly
  • Voice messages are an alternative if typing is slow
  • Stickers: Search "Hindi" in the sticker store for Hindi text stickers

Instagram

  • Transliteration works in captions and comments
  • Hashtags: Type Hindi hashtags like #हिंदी #भारत for better reach
  • Bio text supports Devanagari — add Hindi text to your profile
  • Type in Hindi (transliteration or Devanagari) directly in the search bar
  • Google shows Hindi results when you search in Hindi
  • Voice search in Hindi: tap the mic and speak

YouTube

  • Comments support Hindi text
  • Search in Hindi for Hindi content
  • Community posts can be written in Hindi

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Hindi Keyboard Not Showing Up

  1. Go to Settings → System → Languages & Input → On-screen keyboard
  2. Make sure Gboard (or your preferred keyboard) is enabled
  3. If Gboard is enabled but Hindi is not showing, go to Gboard → Languages and re-add Hindi

Transliteration Suggestions Are Wrong

  • Type more characters before selecting — "bha" instead of "bh" for भ
  • If the wrong word keeps appearing, tap and hold the suggestion to remove it from predictions
  • Clear Gboard learned data: Gboard Settings → Advanced → Delete learned words and data

Characters Appearing as Boxes (□□□)

Your phone may not have a Hindi font installed (rare on modern Android):
  1. Go to Settings → Display → Font
  2. If available, download a font that supports Devanagari
  3. Most Android 8+ phones support Hindi natively — try restarting if characters appear as boxes

Voice Typing Not Recognizing Hindi

  1. Check internet connection — Google voice typing needs data
  2. Ensure Hindi language pack is downloaded: Settings → Google → Voice → Offline speech recognition → Hindi
  3. Speak closer to the microphone
  4. Try in a quieter environment

Autocorrect Changing Hindi Words to English

  1. Gboard Settings → Text Correction
  2. Turn off "Auto-correction" or set it to Hindi only
  3. Alternatively, keep autocorrect on but train it by consistently selecting the correct Hindi suggestions

If you are setting up Hindi typing for the first time, here is the fastest path:

  1. Use Gboard (already installed on most phones)
  2. Add Hindi (Transliteration) as your second language
  3. Keep English as primary, Hindi as secondary
  4. Switch with spacebar long-press when you want to type Hindi
  5. Use voice input for long messages when in a quiet place
This setup takes 2 minutes to configure and covers 90% of Hindi typing needs on Android. You can always add the full Devanagari keyboard later if you want to type faster without transliteration.

Your Android phone is the most convenient Hindi typing tool you own. Set it up once, and typing in Hindi becomes as natural as typing in English.
