Hindi Typing for Railway Exam (RRB) — NTPC, Group D & Clerk Skill Test

Railway jobs are the most sought-after government positions in India. Lakhs of candidates appear for RRB exams every year, and for many clerical and NTPC posts, the final hurdle is a typing skill test in Hindi.

You have cleared the CBT. You have cleared the physical test (if applicable). Now you need to prove you can type. Here is exactly how to prepare.

RRB Typing Test Requirements

Different railway recruitment boards have slightly different requirements, but here is the standard:

Key point: The typing test is qualifying only for most railway posts. You pass or fail — there is no ranking based on typing speed. Hit 30 WPM in Hindi and you are through.

How WPM Is Calculated

Railways follow the same standard as most government typing tests:

Net WPM = (Total Keystrokes - Error Keystrokes) ÷ (5 × Time in Minutes)

One "word" = 5 keystrokes. Spaces count as keystrokes.

Example:

• You type 1,800 keystrokes in 10 minutes
• You make 50 error keystrokes
• Net WPM = (1800 - 50) ÷ (5 × 10) = 1750 ÷ 50 = 35 WPM ✅

Understanding the Railway Typing Test Format

What You See on Screen

The exam uses a dedicated typing test application on a Windows desktop:

1. Top panel: The Hindi passage you need to type (usually 250-400 words)
2. Bottom panel: Text input area where you type
3. Timer: Countdown from 10:00 displayed prominently
4. Status bar: Live keystroke count (on some setups)

Passage Characteristics

Railway typing passages tend to be:

• General Hindi prose — similar to newspaper editorials


• Government/administrative language — शासकीय भाषा


• Railway-specific content — sometimes includes terms like यात्री (passenger), रेलगाड़ी (train), प्लेटफॉर्म (platform)


• Moderate difficulty — fewer literary/complex conjuncts than SSC passages

5-Week Railway Typing Preparation Plan

Week 1: Keyboard Familiarization

If you are starting from zero Hindi typing experience:

Days 1-3: Learn the Home Row

Note how ट्र (train) and ड्र (driver) are railway-specific conjuncts you will encounter more here than in other government exams.

• Take two 10-minute mock tests daily under exam conditions
• Use passages you have never seen before
• Log results in a tracking sheet

Error Patterns Specific to Railway Passages

Railway exam passages use vocabulary that trips up even practiced typists:

1. English Loanwords in Devanagari

Words like प्लेटफॉर्म, सिग्नल, इंजन, कंप्यूटर use characters that are less common in pure Hindi text. Practice these specifically.

2. Number-Heavy Sentences

Railway passages often include statistics: "वर्ष 2025-26 में 1,45,000 नई भर्तियाँ की गई।" Practice switching between Hindi text and numbers without losing rhythm.

3. Abbreviations and Acronyms

रे.बो. (Railway Board), भा.रे. (Indian Railways), मं. (Ministry) — these require you to type punctuation dots between Hindi characters, which breaks flow.

4. Station and City Names

Names like विशाखापट्टनम, तिरुवनंतपुरम, भुवनेश्वर require long sequences of conjuncts and less-common characters. These are not everyday typing words.

Exam Day — What to Expect

At the Center

1. Arrive 60 minutes before the scheduled time
2. Document verification happens first (Admit card + photo ID)
3. You are assigned a specific computer
4. Biometric verification (fingerprint/photo) may be taken

Before the Test Starts

• You get 2-5 minutes to check the keyboard
• Use this time wisely: Type a few words to confirm the layout works
• Check that the Hindi input method is active (Inscript or your preferred layout)
• If something is wrong, raise your hand immediately — do not wait for the test to start

During the Test

• The passage appears on screen. Read the first sentence before you start.
• Type at your practiced pace — do not try to go faster than your comfort zone
• The backspace key works — but use it sparingly
• Do not copy-paste — the exam software blocks it
• If you lose your place in the passage, look for the last word you typed

After the Test

• Your result (pass/fail) is typically communicated along with the final merit list
• No immediate feedback on WPM at the center
• If you fail the typing test, you may get one more attempt (check your specific RRB notification)

Special Situations

I Already Know English Typing at 35+ WPM

Take the test in English. The requirement is 35 WPM for English. If you are already there, you save weeks of Hindi typing practice. But verify that the post you applied for accepts English typing — some Hindi-designated posts require Hindi only.

I Know Krutidev but the Center Only Has Inscript

This has happened to candidates. Krutidev is not a system-level keyboard layout — it is a font-based workaround. If the exam center did not install Krutidev font, you cannot use it. Prevention: Start learning Inscript now as a backup. Even basic Inscript at 20 WPM is better than zero WPM because Krutidev is unavailable.

I Am a PWD Candidate

Relaxation in typing speed is available for candidates with benchmark disabilities:

• Candidates with locomotor disability affecting typing: reduced speed requirement
• Visually impaired candidates: may be exempted from typing test
• Check the specific RRB notification for current relaxation norms

My Typing Speed Is Stuck at 25 WPM

You are in the plateau zone. This is normal. Common fixes:

1. Switch practice material — boredom causes plateaus
2. Practice in short bursts — 10 minutes intense > 30 minutes lazy
3. Focus on your weakest 5 keys — improving those gives disproportionate speed gains
4. Type faster than comfortable for 2-minute bursts — stretch your speed ceiling, then drop back to accuracy mode
