Tier 2 is the exam that decides everything in SSC CGL — your post allocation, your posting location, and your career trajectory. Tier 1 is just screening; Tier 2 is where the real ranking happens. The difference between getting Tax Assistant (Level 4) and Assistant Section Officer (Level 6/7) often comes down to 20–30 marks in Tier 2.
Here's how to maximize your Tier 2 score.
SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam Pattern (2026)
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |
| Session I: Mathematical Abilities | 30 | 90 | Combined: 2 hours 15 min |
| Session I: Reasoning & General Intelligence | 30 | 90 |
| Session I: English Language & Comprehension | 45 | 135 |
| Session I: General Awareness | 25 | 75 |
| Session II: Computer Knowledge | 20 | 60 | 15 minutes |
| Session III: Statistics (for JSO only) | 100 | 200 | 2 hours |
Total (Session I + II): 450 marks (for most posts)
Negative marking: 1 mark for every wrong answer (questions carry 3 marks each in Session I)
Section-Wise Strategy
Mathematical Abilities (30 Questions, 90 Marks)
Difficulty level: Significantly harder than Tier 1. Expect 10th–12th level problems with complex calculations.
Topic-wise priority:
| Priority | Topics | Weight (Approx) | Score Target |
| Must-do | Arithmetic (Percentage, Profit/Loss, SI/CI, Ratio, Time-Work, Time-Speed) | 40% | 30/36 marks |
| Must-do | Algebra + Geometry + Mensuration | 30% | 20/27 marks |
| Good-to-do | Number System, Averages, Mixtures | 15% | 10/14 marks |
| Selective | Trigonometry, Data Interpretation | 15% | 8/13 marks |
| Target | 68/90 |
Key tips:
- Speed matters: You have roughly 2.5 minutes per math question. Practice timed sets of 30 questions in 60 minutes.
- Learn shortcuts: Vedic math, ratio-based approaches, and approximation techniques save 30–60 seconds per question.
- Don't attempt all 30 if not confident. 25 correct with 5 skipped > 30 attempted with 10 wrong.
Reasoning & General Intelligence (30 Questions, 90 Marks)
Difficulty level: Moderate to hard. More complex than Tier 1 but very scoreable with practice.
| Topic | Weight | Strategy |
| Syllogisms, Statement-Conclusion | 15% | Logic rules — practice extensively |
| Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations | 15% | Pattern recognition |
| Analogy, Classification, Series | 20% | Easiest section — maximize here |
| Puzzles, Seating Arrangement | 20% | Practice daily — time-consuming but high scoring |
| Matrix, Paper Folding, Mirror Image | 15% | Visual reasoning — practice pays off |
| Mathematical reasoning | 15% | Overlaps with Quant |
| Score target | 72/90 |
English Language & Comprehension (45 Questions, 135 Marks)
Difficulty level: 10+2 to graduation level. This section carries the most marks in Session I and often decides the final ranking.
| Topic | Weight | Score Target |
| Reading Comprehension (2–3 passages) | 25% | 28/34 marks |
| Error spotting / Sentence correction | 15% | 17/20 marks |
| Fill in the blanks (vocabulary/grammar) | 15% | 17/20 marks |
| Synonyms / Antonyms / Idioms | 10% | 12/14 marks |
| One word substitution | 10% | 12/14 marks |
| Cloze test / Para jumbles | 15% | 17/20 marks |
| Active-Passive, Direct-Indirect | 10% | 10/13 marks |
| Target | 113/135 |
English is the highest-weight section. Improving English from average to strong can swing your rank by 2,000–5,000 positions.
Preparation plan:
- Read editorials daily (The Hindu / Indian Express) — 30 minutes
- Learn 10 new words daily from previous year papers
- Practice grammar rules (Wren & Martin or SP Bakshi)
- Solve 1 RC passage daily under timed conditions
General Awareness (25 Questions, 75 Marks)
| Topic | Weight | Focus |
| Static GK (History, Geography, Polity, Science) | 50% | NCERT 6–10 based |
| Current Affairs (last 6 months) | 30% | Monthly magazines + daily news |
| Economy basics | 10% | Budget, schemes, GDP, inflation |
| Awards, Sports, Books | 10% | Last 6 months only |
| Score target | 50/75 |
Computer Knowledge (20 Questions, 60 Marks)
| Topic | Weight |
| Basic computer concepts (hardware, software, OS) | 25% |
| MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) | 30% |
| Internet and networking basics | 15% |
| Database concepts | 10% |
| Computer security, viruses | 10% |
| Binary/Number systems | 10% |
| Score target | 48/60 |
This is the easiest section — most graduates can score 40+ with basic preparation. Use Arihant's computer awareness book or any standard reference.
Target Scores for Top Posts
| Post | Pay Level | Approx Tier 2 Cutoff (General) | Target Score |
| Assistant Section Officer (CSS) | Level 7 | 370–390 | 400+ |
| Inspector (CBIC/CBDT) | Level 5 | 340–360 | 370+ |
| Tax Assistant | Level 4 | 300–320 | 340+ |
| Auditor / Accountant | Level 4 | 280–310 | 320+ |
| Sub-Inspector (CBI) | Level 6 | 350–370 | 380+ |
To get Inspector or ASO, you need 350+ in Tier 2. This means strong performance across all sections, not just one or two.
3-Month Preparation Plan
| Week | Quant | English | Reasoning | GA | Computer |
| 1–2 | Arithmetic basics + shortcuts | Grammar rules | Series, Analogy, Classification | NCERT revision | Basic concepts |
| 3–4 | Algebra + Geometry | Vocabulary building | Coding, Blood Relations | Current affairs catch-up | MS Office |
| 5–6 | Mensuration + DI | RC practice daily | Puzzles, Seating | Static GK revision | Internet, Security |
| 7–8 | Previous year papers | Error spotting drills | Previous year papers | Economy, Polity | Previous year papers |
| 9–10 | Mock tests (full length) | Mock tests | Mock tests | Monthly CA compilation | Mock tests |
| 11–12 | Revision + weak areas | Revision | Revision | Final week revision | Quick revision |
Mock Test Strategy
| Phase | Frequency | What to Analyze |
| Week 1–4 | 1 mock/week (sectional) | Topic-wise accuracy |
| Week 5–8 | 2 mocks/week (full length) | Time management, section order |
| Week 9–12 | 3 mocks/week | Score consistency, weak spots |
After every mock: Analyze every wrong answer. Maintain an error log — categorize mistakes as "conceptual," "silly," or "time pressure." Fix conceptual errors first, then work on speed.
Should I attempt all questions in Tier 2?
No. With −1 negative marking on 3-mark questions, each wrong answer effectively costs you 4 marks (3 lost + 1 deducted). Attempt only questions you're 80%+ confident about. In math, leaving 3–5 tough questions is better than guessing.
Is coaching necessary for Tier 2?
For Quant and English, good self-study material (Kiran/Rakesh Yadav for Quant, SP Bakshi for English) + mock tests can match coaching quality. For GA, self-study with monthly magazines (Pratiyogita Darpan, GK Today) is sufficient. Coaching helps with structured revision and motivation, but it's not essential.
How important is Tier 2 vs Tier 1 for final ranking?
Tier 1 is only qualifying/screening — it doesn't count in final merit. Your final rank is based entirely on Tier 2 + Tier 3 (if applicable) marks. A candidate who barely clears Tier 1 but tops Tier 2 will get a better post than someone who tops Tier 1 but scores average in Tier 2.
