Online coaching for government exams has exploded over the past five years. The market is worth thousands of crores, and every platform claims to be the best. But when you're spending Rs 5,000 to Rs 30,000 of hard-earned money, you deserve an honest assessment — not a marketing pitch.
I've analyzed the major platforms based on content quality, mock test accuracy, user experience, pricing, and actual results. No platform sponsored this review. No affiliate links.
Platform-by-Platform Review
1. Testbook
Price Range: Rs 499–2,999/year depending on the plan Strongest areas: Mock tests, previous year papers, test analysis What Testbook does well:- Their mock test engine is the best in the market. The interface closely mirrors actual exam software (TCS iON for SSC, IBPS exam portal for Banking).
- Test analysis shows time per question, accuracy per topic, comparison with top scorers, and improvement trends over time.
- PYQ database is comprehensive — SSC papers going back to 2017, Banking papers from 2018 onwards.
- The app is fast and rarely crashes.
- Video courses are decent but not exceptional. The teachers are competent but rarely inspiring.
- Current affairs coverage is adequate but not as detailed as some competitors.
- Customer support can be slow.
2. Adda247
Price Range: Rs 999–4,999/year Strongest areas: Banking exam content, daily quizzes, comprehensive study plans What Adda247 does well:- Banking content is their bread and butter. IBPS PO, SBI PO, and Clerk mocks are among the most accurate in the market.
- Daily quiz format keeps you engaged — a 10-question quiz every morning on your phone takes 5 minutes and builds consistency.
- Study plans are well-structured with day-by-day schedules.
- The Bankersadda blog and app have been around since 2010 — they understand Banking exams deeply.
- SSC content is good but not as sharp as their Banking content. If SSC is your only target, Testbook is stronger.
- The app can be bloated and slow on older phones.
- Video courses vary wildly in quality. Some teachers are excellent; others read from slides.
- Pricing is confusing — too many plans with overlapping features.
3. Unacademy
Price Range: Rs 15,000–30,000/year (Plus subscription) Strongest areas: UPSC preparation, faculty diversity, live classes What Unacademy does well:- The largest pool of educators. For UPSC, they have Roman Saini, Lukmaan IAS, Pavneet Singh, and dozens more. You can pick the teacher whose style suits you.
- Live classes with real-time doubt clearing. This partially replicates the coaching classroom experience.
- "Legends" feature lets you learn from UPSC toppers directly.
- Special classes and crash courses before exams are well-timed.
- Expensive. At Rs 15,000-30,000/year, it's 10–15x the cost of Testbook or Adda247.
- Quality is inconsistent across teachers. The platform has hundreds of educators, and not all are good. Choosing the wrong educator wastes months.
- Mock test quality for SSC and Banking doesn't match Testbook or Adda247.
- The subscription model encourages consumption, not learning. You can spend hours watching lectures and feeling productive without actually improving.
4. Oliveboard
Price Range: Rs 999–3,999/year Strongest areas: Banking mocks, Bolt series, clean interface What Oliveboard does well:- The "Bolt" series — 30-minute focused tests — is a unique feature that fits into busy schedules. No other platform has something equivalent.
- Banking mocks are high quality, especially for IBPS PO and SBI PO.
- Monthly GK supplement ("Edge") is one of the most concise and useful current affairs compilations.
- App interface is clean and fast. No bloat.
- Insurance exam coverage (LIC AAO, NIACL) is better than competitors.
- SSC and Railway content is limited. This is primarily a Banking platform.
- Video courses are limited in scope.
- Smaller user base means percentile comparisons in mocks are less meaningful than Testbook or Adda247.
5. BYJU'S Exam Prep (formerly Gradeup)
Price Range: Rs 3,000–15,000/year Strongest areas: Structured courses, video quality What it does well:- Production quality of video lectures is high. Well-lit, well-edited, clear audio.
- Structured courses with clear progression paths.
- State-level exam coverage is better than most competitors.
- The BYJU'S acquisition created organizational instability. Product updates have been inconsistent.
- Mock test quality has declined since the transition from Gradeup.
- Pricing is higher than Testbook or Adda247 without proportionally better value.

My Recommendation by Exam
SSC (CGL, CHSL, MTS): Testbook Pass Pro. Best SSC mocks, best value. Banking (IBPS PO, SBI PO, Clerk): Adda247 Mahapack OR Oliveboard. Both are strong. Adda247 if you want daily engagement features; Oliveboard if you prefer a clean, focused experience. UPSC: Unacademy Plus if budget allows. Otherwise, YouTube (Drishti IAS, Mrunal, StudyIQ) + Vision IAS test series. Railways: Testbook. Their RRB NTPC and Group D mocks are solid. State PSC: BYJU'S Exam Prep or Adda247 — both have decent state-level coverage. Before You Buy: Checklist
- Try the free tier first. Every platform offers free mock tests and sample content. Spend a week with 2–3 platforms before committing.
- Check if your target exam is actually covered. Some platforms advertise "all exams" but their content for niche exams is thin.
- Read recent reviews, not old ones. A platform that was great in 2023 may have changed significantly. Check Play Store reviews from the last 3 months.
- Buy during sales. Every platform runs Republic Day, Independence Day, and exam-season sales with 40–60% discounts. Wait for these unless your exam is imminent.
- Don't buy multiple platforms. One good platform + YouTube is enough. Two paid platforms means you'll use neither properly.
