The most common question from anyone starting SSC preparation: "Which books should I buy?"

The correct answer is fewer books than you think. The biggest mistake SSC aspirants make is accumulating 8–10 books and finishing none. Two books finished thoroughly beat eight books half-read.

This guide gives you specific book recommendations for each section, notes which exams each book is best suited for, and distinguishes between books worth buying and free resources that work just as well.

The Core Principle: Less is More

Before the list, a rule: commit to one primary book per subject, complete it, then supplement if needed. Switching books mid-way or reading multiple books simultaneously on the same topic is one of the fastest ways to waste months of preparation.

Section-Wise Book Recommendations

Quantitative Aptitude / Maths

Book NameAuthor/PublisherFor Which SectionBest For
Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive ExaminationsRS Aggarwal (S. Chand)All Arithmetic, Algebra, GeometryCGL, CHSL, MTS, GD (Beginner level)
Advance Maths for SSC ExamsRakesh YadavAlgebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, MensurationCGL (Tier 1 + 2 both)

SSC Mathematics (Chapter-wise Solved Papers)Kiran PublicationsPractice & PYQ AnalysisCGL, CHSL, Both
Magical Book on Quicker MathsM. TyraSpeed Maths techniquesCGL, CHSL (after basics covered)
Recommended approach:
  • Beginners: RS Aggarwal first. It's slow-paced and explains from scratch.
  • After basics: Rakesh Yadav for SSC-specific shortcut methods. His Geometry and Trigonometry for SSC is particularly good.
  • M. Tyra: Use this specifically for learning speed calculation techniques. Not a cover-to-cover book — treat it as a reference.
  • Kiran PYQs: Buy and solve after completing your theory books. Essential for CGL.

Reasoning (Verbal + Non-Verbal)

Book NameAuthor/PublisherFor Which SectionBest For
A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal ReasoningRS Aggarwal (S. Chand)Both Verbal and Non-VerbalCGL, CHSL, Both
SSC Reasoning (Chapter-wise)Kiran PublicationsAll ReasoningCGL, CHSL, Both
Analytical ReasoningMK PandeyLogical ReasoningCGL Tier 2 (advanced reasoning)
Note: RS Aggarwal Reasoning is comprehensive but some sections (like figure-based) have quality issues in print editions — use digital or a recent print edition. Kiran's chapter-wise solved papers for Reasoning are more valuable for SSC than any theory book because the PYQ patterns are very predictable.

English Language

Book NameAuthor/PublisherFor Which SectionBest For
Quick Learning Objective General EnglishSP Bakshi (Arihant)All English topicsCGL, CHSL, Both
High School English Grammar & CompositionWren & MartinGrammar rules, Error SpottingCGL Tier 2, CHSL

SSC English (Chapter-wise Solved Papers)Kiran PublicationsPYQ practiceCGL, CHSL, Both
Note: SP Bakshi is the most popular SSC English book and rightfully so. It covers every topic tested in SSC with good explanations. Wren & Martin is not a book you "read" — use it as a reference when you encounter a grammar doubt. Word Power Made Easy is one of the best vocabulary books available and is valuable beyond just exams.

General Knowledge / General Awareness

Book NameAuthor/PublisherFor Which SectionBest For
Lucent's General KnowledgeLucent PublicationsAll Static GKCGL, CHSL, MTS, GD, All

Note: Lucent's GK is the bible for SSC static GK. The book is dense but covers nearly everything that appears in SSC GK sections. NCERTs are free (downloadable from ncert.nic.in) and are essential for Science questions in SSC exams.

Previous Year Papers: The Most Underrated Resource

Previous year papers deserve their own section because they're often more valuable than any standard book:

ResourcePublisherCoverageBest For
SSC CGL Previous Year Papers (1999–2023)Kiran PublicationsCGL Tier 1 + Tier 2CGL aspirants
SSC CHSL Previous Year PapersKiran PublicationsCHSL Tier 1CHSL aspirants
SSC Multi-Tasking Staff PapersArihantMTS onlyMTS aspirants
SSC GD Constable PapersKiran / ArihantGD onlyGD aspirants
Buy the Kiran chapter-wise solved papers for your target exam. These organize all previous questions topic-by-topic, which is far more useful for practice than chronological full papers. How to use PYQs:
  1. After completing theory of a topic, solve all PYQ questions on that topic from Kiran
  2. Identify which sub-topics appear most frequently
  3. Identify any topic you consistently get wrong — that's your target improvement area
  4. In the final month, solve 3–4 complete full-length PYQ papers under timed conditions

Free Resources (as Good as Paid)

NCERT textbooks: Available free at ncert.nic.in — Class 6–10 History, Geography, Science, Polity, Economics. These are mandatory and there's no paid substitute. PIB (pib.gov.in): Government press releases, completely free. SSC website (ssc.gov.in): Official previous year papers in PDF format — download these for practice. DrikPati / EduDose / Testbook (free sections): Online platforms with large question banks. Free tier is often sufficient for practice questions.

Mock Test Platforms

PlatformHighlightsExam Coverage
TestbookLarge question bank, detailed analysisSSC, Railway, Banking
Adda247Very SSC-focused, good mock seriesSSC primary, Banking secondary
OliveboardClean interface, good Banking mocksBanking primary, SSC secondary
Gradeup (now BYJU's Exam Prep)Broad coverageSSC, Banking, Railway

Paid vs free mocks: The first 2–3 mocks per platform are usually free. Use these across 3–4 platforms to get different question styles. For consistent 60+ mock practice, paying for one platform's full mock series is worth the investment (typically ₹500–1500 for a year's access).

YouTube Channels for SSC Prep

YouTube can't replace books and mocks but it complements them well, especially for:

  • Concept videos when a textbook explanation is unclear

  • Shortcut techniques for Maths

  • Current affairs daily summaries

Note: YouTube is for learning supplementation, not primary preparation. Don't track hours spent watching videos as "study time."

Channels that SSC aspirants find useful cover Maths shortcuts, English grammar explanations in Hindi/English, GK rapid-fire series, and mock test analysis. Search specifically for your topic when you need concept clarification rather than subscribing to a channel and following everything.

Books to Avoid

Books with excessive shortcuts without explanation: Some Maths shortcut books give you tricks without the underlying logic. You'll forget the tricks within 2 weeks. Only use shortcut books after you understand the concept. Outdated editions: Verify the edition year before buying — especially for GK books where an outdated edition wastes your money. Lucent's gets updated; always buy the latest edition. Multiple books on the same subject: If you already have SP Bakshi for English, you don't need Wren & Martin for daily study — only as reference. Buying both and trying to cover both is a common pitfall. "Complete" or "Master" compilation books: These giant 1,200-page "complete SSC guide" books attempt to cover everything in one volume and invariably cover everything superficially. Section-specific books are almost always better.

FAQ

Is it necessary to buy all these books or can I use PDFs?

PDFs of all these books are technically available online, but studying from a screen significantly reduces retention for most people. Physical books also allow easier annotation and quick flipping. For GK and current affairs, digital is acceptable. For Maths and Reasoning where you'll practice heavily, physical books are better.

Which one book should I buy first if I'm on a tight budget?

If only one book: Kiran SSC CGL Chapter-wise Solved Papers. It's both a question bank and a concept reviewer, and it's the closest thing to the actual exam. Add RS Aggarwal Quant and SP Bakshi English as your second and third purchases.

Are coaching notes better than books?

Coaching notes are essentially condensed summaries of the same books. They save time but sacrifice depth. If you're short on time, coaching notes + PYQs is a valid approach. If you have 6+ months, cover the actual books.

Do I need different books for SSC CGL Tier 2 compared to Tier 1?

The same books cover both tiers, but Tier 2 requires deeper practice — especially in Maths (Geometry, Trigonometry) and English (advanced grammar). Add Rakesh Yadav Advance Maths specifically for Tier 2 Maths, and practice more Error Spotting and Sentence Improvement from Kiran PYQs.
