Bank Exam Preparation Tips: IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk and SBI PO Strategy
Complete bank exam preparation guide covering section-wise strategy, speed improvement, sectional cutoffs, current affairs for banking, and recommended books.
Banking exams have a specific rhythm. The syllabus is fixed, the pattern is predictable, and the scores that get you through are public knowledge. Yet thousands of candidates fail every year — not because the exams are hard, but because they prepare wrong.
This guide covers what actually works for IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, and SBI PO — three of the most popular banking exams in India.
Understanding the Banking Exam Structure
IBPS PO / SBI PO:- Prelims: Quant (35Q/20 min), Reasoning (35Q/20 min), English (30Q/20 min) — 100 marks, 1 hour
- Mains: Reasoning & Computer Aptitude (45Q/60 min), Data Analysis & Interpretation (35Q/45 min), English (35Q/40 min), General/Economy/Banking Awareness (40Q/35 min)
- Prelims: Quant (35Q/20 min), Reasoning (35Q/20 min), English (30Q/20 min)
- Mains: Quant (50Q/45 min), Reasoning + Computer (50Q/45 min), English (40Q/35 min), GA/Banking Awareness (50Q/35 min)
Section-Wise Preparation Strategy
Quantitative Aptitude / Data Analysis
Banking Quant has two distinct flavors:
Arithmetic (high in Prelims): Percentage, Ratio, Profit-Loss, SI/CI, Speed-Distance, Time-Work, Averages, Mixture & Alligation Data Interpretation (dominates Mains): Table DI, Bar Graph, Line Graph, Pie Chart, Missing DI, Caselet DIFocus points:
- Practice calculation speed — mental maths for multiplication tables up to 25, squares up to 30, cubes up to 20
- Approximation techniques for Prelims (exact calculation wastes time)
- For Mains, practice complex DI sets with 5-question blocks — the scoring is dense here
- Number Series (pattern-based) appears in both Prelims and Mains; 10 minutes of daily practice builds intuition
Reasoning Ability
Reasoning in banking is more puzzle-heavy than SSC.
Prelims staples:- Inequality (direct and coded): should be 100% accuracy, takes 30–40 seconds each
- Syllogisms: 5–6 questions, very doable with practice
- Blood Relations and Direction Test: manageable
- Simple coding-decoding
- Complex Puzzles and Seating Arrangements (floor-based, circular, linear) — 3–4 sets of 5 questions each
- Input-Output: practice the shift operation pattern
- Data Sufficiency
- Logical Reasoning (statement-conclusion, course of action)
English Language
Banking English is more application-based than SSC English.
Prelims: Reading Comprehension (10Q), Cloze Test (10Q), Error Detection or Para Jumbles (5Q), Fill in the Blanks (5Q) Mains: Longer RC passages, Sentence Connectors, Match the Column questions, Paragraph CompletionWhat works:
- Read 1–2 editorials daily — improves RC speed and vocabulary simultaneously
- Learn 10 vocabulary words per day from context, not isolated lists
- Error detection requires grammar rules to be automatic, not recalled — practice 20 sentences daily
- Para Jumbles: look for logical connectors, pronoun references, and topic sentence as anchor
General Awareness / Banking Awareness
This section has two parts: Current Affairs (last 6 months) and Static Banking Awareness.
Static Banking (must know cold):- RBI functions and monetary policy tools (Repo Rate, CRR, SLR, MSF, Reverse Repo)
- Types of banks (Scheduled, Non-scheduled, Payment Banks, Small Finance Banks)
- Important banking acts and committees
- Negotiable Instruments Act basics
- Basel norms in simple terms
- Priority Sector Lending norms
- SEBI, NABARD, SIDBI functions
- Financial inclusions schemes (PM Jan Dhan, Mudra, etc.)
- Monthly banking/economic appointments (RBI Governor, SEBI Chairman, etc.)
- Major government schemes with financial components
- Budget highlights (when applicable)
- Major mergers/acquisitions in banking sector
- India's economic data (GDP, inflation, forex reserves — approximate figures)
- Sports (only major tournaments and Indian achievements)
Computer Aptitude
Tested in IBPS PO/Clerk Mains only. The level is basic:
- Basic computer operations, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint basics)
- Internet basics, networking terms
- Computer hardware and software terminology
- Number systems (binary, decimal, hexadecimal conversions)
- Keyboard shortcuts
Don't over-invest here — 2 weeks of focused preparation is enough for most people.
Speed Improvement Techniques
Banking exams punish slowness more than wrongness.
For Quant speed:- Tables up to 25, squares up to 30, cubes up to 15 — commit to memory
- Practice two-step mental maths: instead of writing, compute intermediate steps mentally
- Approximation for answer choices that are spread apart (e.g., 498.7 → 500)
- Inequalities and Syllogisms should take 25–30 seconds per question with practice
- For complex puzzles, invest the first 3 minutes reading all conditions before writing — impulsive partial diagrams waste more time
- Develop a personal shorthand for puzzle variables (M for Male, don't write full names)
- RC speed improves with regular editorial reading — it's a long-term investment
- For Cloze Test: read the full passage once before attempting any blank
Sectional Cutoff Strategy
This is where many students go wrong. You can score 145/200 overall but get eliminated if any one section is below the cutoff.
Principle: Get 5–7 marks above the sectional cutoff before focusing on maximizing overall score.Typical Prelims sectional cutoffs:
- English: 7–10 marks (out of 30)
- Quant: 8–10 marks (out of 35)
- Reasoning: 8–10 marks (out of 35)
These look easy to cross, but with sectional time limits, a student who is weak in one section can panic and score below cutoff. Strategy: In your mocks, track section-wise scores separately. If you're consistently below cutoff in a section, address it before worrying about total score.

Common Mistakes
- Treating Prelims and Mains prep as the same: they're different exams. Mains has harder DI and longer puzzles.
- Ignoring GA until the last month: Banking Awareness is static knowledge — start early
- Practicing Quant and Reasoning without timing: untimed practice doesn't prepare you for sectional time pressure
- Not tracking sectional scores in mocks
- Spending 90% of study time on Quant/Reasoning while ignoring English (many candidates fail on English cutoff)
FAQ
How many months of preparation are needed for IBPS PO?
For a fresh candidate with moderate Maths/English background, 4–6 months is reasonable for Prelims. Mains preparation typically requires another 2–3 months after qualifying Prelims. If you're already familiar with the topics, focused 3-month preparation for Prelims is achievable. Is SBI PO harder than IBPS PO?
SBI PO Mains typically has harder DI and more application-based questions. SBI also conducts a Group Discussion and Interview separately, and the competition is tighter. That said, the preparation base is the same — SBI PO requires higher accuracy and speed. How important are mocks for banking exams?
Absolutely essential. The sectional time limits mean that mock tests teach you pacing strategies you simply can't learn from book practice. Aim for 40–50 full mocks before the actual Prelims. What is a safe score in IBPS PO Prelims?
Scores above 70–75 out of 100 (depending on the category) generally get shortlisted. The actual cutoff varies by year and state. Focus on accuracy and speed rather than targeting a specific number.Related Articles
