SSC GD Constable is the single largest recruitment in India by volume — the 2024-25 notification had over 39,000 vacancies across 8 Central Armed Police Forces and armed organizations. For candidates who've passed Class 10, are physically fit, and want a government job with good pay, real responsibility, and a path to promotions, GD Constable is one of the most direct options available.

The job involves real physical work — patrolling borders, guarding installations, handling law enforcement — so the selection process tests both written ability and physical capability.

Eligibility

Educational Qualification

10th pass (Matriculation) from any recognized board. No higher qualification required or preferred (higher qualification doesn't give advantage in selection).

Age Limits

  • General: 18–23 years
  • OBC: 18–26 years
  • SC/ST: 18–28 years

Exam Pattern

SSC GD selection has four stages.

Stage 1 — Computer Based Examination (CBT)

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Total Questions: 80
  • Total Marks: 160
  • Negative marking: 0.25 per wrong answer
SectionQuestionsMarks
General Intelligence and Reasoning2040
General Knowledge and General Awareness2040
Elementary Mathematics2040
English / Hindi2040
The exam is available in English and Hindi (and regional languages for some questions). The syllabus is Class 10 level — nothing beyond that. Difficulty is lower compared to CHSL or CGL but cutoffs are competitive due to volume.

CBT is used to shortlist candidates for PET/PST. Typically 3–5x the final vacancy count are shortlisted.

Stage 2 — PET (Physical Efficiency Test) and PST (Physical Standard Test)

This stage filters based on physical capability.

Physical Standard Test (PST): Height and chest measurements. Verification of physical standards as detailed in eligibility. Physical Efficiency Test (PET):
TaskMaleFemale
Race5 km in 24 minutes1.6 km in 8.5 minutes
Long Jump11 feet (3 attempts)9 feet (3 attempts)
High Jump3.5 feet (3 attempts)3 feet (3 attempts)
PET/PST is qualifying — no marks. Failure disqualifies you regardless of CBT score.

Stage 3 — Medical Examination

Comprehensive medical test at designated medical boards. Key checks:

  • Vision (critical — color blindness disqualifies)

  • Hearing

  • Ortho (no deformity, flat foot, varicose veins are disqualifying)

  • General health

Candidates declared medically unfit can appeal to Review Medical Board within the timeline specified.

Stage 4 — Document Verification

Original documents verified: 10th certificate, age proof, category certificate (OBC/SC/ST/EWS), domicile if applicable, NCC certificate (for NCC candidates), ESM certificate.

Final merit is based on CBT score. No interview.

FAQ

Can I choose which force I want to join in SSC GD? You can express preferences for forces during the application/document verification stage. However, final allocation depends on your rank in merit and vacancy availability in each force. Top rankers generally get their preferred force. Is the 5 km run the most elimination-causing stage? Yes. The race is where most physically underprepared candidates fail PET. Preparing for the run 3–4 months before the exam is essential — start at a comfortable pace and build up. Candidates who ignore physical preparation until after the written result often find themselves eliminating at the PET stage. What is the difference between SSC GD and BSF/CRPF direct recruitment? BSF, CRPF, and some other forces also conduct their own direct recruitment for constable posts separately from SSC GD. The difference is in the recruitment process — SSC GD is a common written exam. Direct force recruitment often involves only PET/PST + medical without a computer-based test. Can women join all forces through SSC GD? Most forces now accept women through SSC GD — CRPF (Mahila battalion), BSF (Mahila wing), CISF, etc. Physical standards for women are different as listed above. Check each force's specific notification for current women's vacancy status.
