SSC CHSL is the go-to exam for candidates who've completed 12th and want a central government job without waiting for a degree. It's a solid entry point — posts like Postal Assistant, LDC, and DEO come with job security, decent salary, and genuine career growth if you're willing to put in the work over the years.

The exam itself is manageable, which means competition is intense. Understanding what you're applying for — and what the job actually looks like — makes all the difference in preparation priorities.

What is SSC CHSL?

The Staff Selection Commission's Combined Higher Secondary Level examination fills vacancies for Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Data Entry Operator (DEO), and Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant (PA/SA) posts in Central Government Ministries, Departments, and the Department of Posts.

It's officially for candidates who have completed Class 12 (10+2) — no bachelor's degree required. This makes it the most accessible SSC exam for younger candidates.

  • Negative marking: 0.50 per wrong answer
SectionQuestionsMarks
General Intelligence & Reasoning2550
General Awareness2550

Tier I is used for shortlisting — roughly 3 times the number of Tier II vacancies are called. The score carries into the final merit.

Tier II — Combined (Skill Test + Written)

This is where CHSL has evolved significantly in recent years.

Tier II Part A — Objective Written Test (2 hours 15 minutes):
SessionContentMarks
Module IMathematical Abilities + Reasoning & General Intelligence60+60 = 120
Module IIEnglish Language + General Awareness60+60 = 120
Module IIIComputer Knowledge Test60
Tier II Part B — Skill Test / Typing Test:
  • DEO posts: Data Entry Speed Test — 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes on a computer
  • LDC/JSA: Typing Test — 35 words/minute (English) or 30 words/minute (Hindi)
  • PA/SA: Skill test conducted by Department of Posts
The skill/typing test is qualifying only — you either pass or fail. But failing means disqualification even if your written score is excellent.

Salary

PostPay LevelBasic PayApprox. Gross Monthly
LDC / JSALevel 2₹19,900₹30,000–38,000
Postal/Sorting AssistantLevel 4₹25,500₹38,000–46,000
DEO / DEO Grade ALevel 4–5₹25,500–29,200₹38,000–48,000
Gross salary includes Basic + DA (~55%) + HRA (varies by posting city — X/Y/Z classification). A PA/SA in Delhi (X city, 24% HRA) would earn around ₹42,000–48,000 gross per month at entry level.

Posting Ministries and Departments

LDC/JSA postings spread across every central ministry:

  • Ministry of Finance, Home, Defence, Education, Agriculture

  • CGDA, CAG offices

  • Central Secretariat, Department of Legal Affairs

  • Regional offices of Central Departments

Postal Assistant postings are in Head Post Offices, Speed Post Centres, Foreign Post Offices, and Railway Mail Service (RMS) offices across India.

DEO postings: Office of CAG (National Capital Region + major cities), CGDA offices, NFDC, and other specified organizations.

Career Growth Prospects

This is where SSC CHSL candidates often have unrealistic expectations. Let's be honest about it:

LDC/JSA track:
  • LDC → UDC (after departmental exam or seniority, usually 8–10 years)
  • UDC → Assistant Section Officer (via LDCE or DPC)
  • ASO → Section Officer → Under Secretary (long track)
The LDC-to-officer track exists but is slow. If you're targeting officer-level work and salary, SSC CGL is a more direct route. CHSL makes more sense as a starting point when you're 18–19 and waiting to complete graduation simultaneously. PA/SA track:
  • Postal Assistant → Inspector of Posts (via departmental exam — IPO exam)
  • Inspector → ASP (Assistant Superintendent) → Superintendent → Group A services
  • PA track is more structured and has a well-defined promotion ladder
DEO track:
  • DEO posts in CAG have a defined promotion path up to Section Officer levels
  • CGDA DEOs have similar departmental promotion routes
The key realization: CHSL is a great foot-in-the-door for central government employment. Many officers in prestigious departments today started as LDC or PA.

FAQ

Can I appear in CHSL while in the first or second year of graduation? Yes, the only requirement is that you've passed Class 12. You don't need to be enrolled in or have completed a degree course to be eligible. Is there a separate notification for PA/SA posts? No. PA/SA, LDC, and DEO are all part of the same CHSL notification and recruitment cycle. You specify your post preferences in the application form. What typing speed is needed and how should I practice? The requirement is 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi. Regular daily typing practice on actual government-style typing test software (not just games) is the way to build this. Many candidates fail this stage despite clearing the written exam. Does CHSL score matter for departmental transfers or reputation? No, once you join, your CHSL score is irrelevant. Your posting and promotion depend entirely on your departmental performance, APAR ratings, and departmental examination results.
