SSC CGL is probably the most talked-about exam among graduates looking for central government jobs. It opens doors to over 20 different post categories — from an Income Tax Inspector sitting across a taxpayer to an Auditor working inside the CAG offices. The salary isn't just decent, it's genuinely competitive once you add DA, HRA, and the other allowances.

Here's a thorough breakdown of what the exam actually involves, what posts are on offer, and how you should approach the application.

What is SSC CGL?

The Staff Selection Commission conducts the Combined Graduate Level exam every year to fill vacancies in various Ministries, Departments, and Organisations under the Government of India. Posts range from Group B (Gazetted and Non-Gazetted) to Group C.

The exam is conducted in multiple tiers — Tier I (Computer Based), Tier II (Computer Based), and for some posts, Tier III (Descriptive) or Tier IV (Skill Test/CPT). Not all posts require all four tiers.

Tips Worth Knowing

  • Tier I cutoffs are usually around 120–135 for General category (varies by year and vacancies)
  • Post preference matters — fill it carefully; you can't change it post-submission
  • If you're targeting Inspector IT or SI CBI, focus more on Tier II since Tier I is just a filter
  • For DEO posts, your Tier I score contributes to final merit — treat it as scoring, not qualifying
  • DEST and CPT failures mean disqualification even if your written score is excellent — practice typing regularly

FAQ

Can arts graduates apply for SSC CGL? Yes. The base qualification is a Bachelor's degree in any discipline. Specific posts like Junior Statistical Officer require Statistics/Maths in graduation, and AAO requires Commerce/Maths/Statistics background. Is SSC CGL conducted every year? SSC releases CGL notifications annually, but the actual exam schedule sometimes slips by a few months. It's wise to check the SSC Annual Calendar rather than assuming fixed dates. What is the difference between ASO and Inspector IT in terms of career growth? Inspector IT (under CBDT) has a defined promotion track — Inspector → ITO → ACIT → DCIT. ASO in CSS (MEA, MHA) follows a different track with faster promotions to Section Officer and above. Both are good; it depends on whether you prefer field/enforcement work or desk administration. Is there a physical fitness test for SSC CGL? Most SSC CGL posts don't have a PFT. Exception: Sub-Inspector in CBI requires a medical fitness test. Candidates should verify post-specific requirements in the official notification.
