SBI PO is in a different league compared to other public sector bank jobs. The State Bank of India is the country's largest bank — over 22,000 branches, operations in 30+ countries, and a balance sheet that dwarfs most PSBs combined. Getting in as a PO here means working in an institution that genuinely operates at scale.

The exam is tougher than IBPS PO, the competition is fierce (30–35 lakh applicants for around 2,000 vacancies), and the selection process has a different structure. But the career rewards are proportionately better.

SBI also has a separate apprenticeship/JA/JAA recruitment process — don't confuse that with SBI PO.

Stage 2 — Main Examination

Online + Descriptive. More detailed than Prelims.

General/Economy/Banking Awareness4040

Descriptive Section (30 minutes, 50 marks): Letter writing and essay/précis. Conducted online immediately after the objective test. SBI weights the descriptive section more than IBPS does — scoring 35+ here is important. Main Total: 200 + 50 = 250 marks

Stage 3 — Group Exercise and Interview

The GE+Interview stage is unique to SBI PO among bank exams.

Group Exercise (20 marks): Usually a group discussion or case study where 8–10 candidates discuss a banking/current affairs topic. Evaluators judge communication, leadership, content, and how well you listen and build on others' points. Interview (30 marks): Personal interview focusing on your background, banking knowledge, current affairs, and motivation. Final Merit: Main (250) + GE (20) + Interview (30) = 300 marks

Minimum qualifying marks: 50% in GE+Interview for General (45% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD).

SBI PO Salary Breakdown

SBI PO follows a separate pay structure compared to other PSBs. The 11th Bipartite Settlement plus SBI's own additions make it one of the better-paying entry-level banking roles.

Pay ComponentAmount
Basic Pay (starting)₹41,960 per month
Special Allowance~7.75% of Basic
DA~46% of Basic (updated quarterly)
HRA9–10% of Basic (X-class city)
City Compensatory AllowanceAs applicable
Medical AllowanceIncluded
Approx. Gross In-Hand (X-class city like Mumbai/Delhi): ₹65,000–75,000 per month Additional Benefits:
  • Subsidized home loan at 1–2% below prime lending rate (this is a massive financial benefit for anyone buying property)
  • Vehicle loan at concessional rates
  • Medical facilities for self and dependents
  • Leave Travel Concession
  • Furniture allowance
  • NPS pension contribution by employer
For an officer posted in Mumbai, the HRA alone can be ₹10,000–12,000/month. The loan concessional rate across a ₹50 lakh home loan over 20 years can translate to ₹15–20 lakh in savings compared to a private sector employee.

Posting Locations

SBI operates across every state and union territory. After joining, your initial posting could be anywhere — metro, urban, semi-urban, or rural. There's no guarantee of home state posting.

Officers typically transfer every 3–5 years. Transfers are the most-cited concern by SBI PO aspirants. The reality: as you grow in seniority, you get more say in preferred postings. Junior officers have limited say.

Circles include Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Bhopal, and all regional headquarters across India.

Fast-track promotions are possible. SBI actively identifies high-performers for accelerated movement. Clearing JAIIB and CAIIB early adds increments and is looked upon favorably during promotion cycles.

SBI also has a specialist officer track where you can move laterally into treasury, forex, IT, or credit departments if your profile fits.

How to Apply

SBI releases its PO notification separately on sbi.co.in. The window is usually open for 3–4 weeks. Application process:

  1. Register on sbi.co.in/careers with email and mobile
  2. Fill the application form, select exam centre preference
  3. Upload photo and signature in specified dimensions
  4. Pay fee: ₹750 for General/OBC/EWS, Nil for SC/ST/PwBD
  5. Print the application form
Monitor SarkariNaukriHub to catch the notification the moment it's released — the window closes fast and many candidates miss it.

FAQ

Is SBI PO harder than IBPS PO? The question pattern is similar, but SBI generally sees higher cutoffs due to its brand value and the candidate quality it attracts. The descriptive section in SBI Mains is weighted at 50 marks vs 25 in IBPS, which makes it more impactful. What is the bond period for SBI PO? SBI requires a bond from POs that they serve for a minimum period (usually 3 years) after completion of training. Breaking the bond requires paying a penalty, the amount of which is specified in the appointment letter. Can SBI PO officers apply for foreign postings? Yes, SBI has international offices in over 30 countries. Officers can apply for foreign postings once they reach a certain scale and meet the criteria. These postings come with additional allowances. What should I focus on most for SBI PO preparation? Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation dominate the Mains. The descriptive section (letter and essay) is often the differentiator. Candidates who score 35+/50 in descriptive while maintaining a decent objective score tend to rank well.
