The Indian Air Force is selective by design — and for good reason. Operating supersonic jets, advanced helicopters, and sophisticated ground systems requires both physical fitness and technical sharpness. But the entry routes are more varied than most people think. Whether you're in 10th standard or already a postgraduate, there's likely a path for you.

Entry Routes Overview

The Three Branches

Flying Branch

The most glamorous and competitive. Pilots — fighter, transport, and helicopter. Navigators (called Observers in Navy; WSOs in Air Force terminology) also fall here. Medical standards are the strictest — SHAPE-1 for pilots. Vision requirements are stringent (correctable vision is now partially allowed after policy changes, but standards still apply).

Flying officers typically spend the first 10–15 years flying operationally before transitioning to staff and command roles.

Technical Branch

Two sub-streams: Aeronautical Engineering — Mechanical (AE(M)) and Aeronautical Engineering — Electronics (AE(L)). These officers maintain and certify aircraft airworthiness. Entry primarily through AFCAT for engineering graduates.

Also includes Education and allied Technical entries for specialised roles.

Ground Duty Branch

Covers a wide range of roles:
  • Administration — HR, logistics, administration
  • Accounts — Financial management
  • Logistics — Supply chain and material management
  • Meteorology — Weather forecasting (critical for flight operations)
  • Education — Faculty at Air Force schools and academy
  • Legal (JAG) — Military law
Ground duty officers don't fly, but they run the backend that keeps the flying branch operational.

AFCAT — The Main Direct Entry for Graduates

AFCAT is held twice a year (February and August cycles). It's the primary route for graduates who missed NDA age or want to join after a degree.

Eligibility:
  • Flying Branch: Graduation with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level, minimum 60% overall. OR B.E./B.Tech with 60%.
  • Technical Branch: B.E./B.Tech in relevant streams (Electronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, etc.) with 60%.
  • Ground Duty: Graduation in any stream with 60%.
AFCAT Exam Pattern:
SectionQuestionsMarks
Verbal Ability in English3075
Numerical Ability1537.5
Reasoning and Military Aptitude3587.5
General Awareness2050
Total100250
Duration: 2 hours. Negative marking: -1 for wrong answers.

For technical branch applicants, there's an additional Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT) conducted along with AFCAT.

AFSB — Air Force Selection Board

Clearing AFCAT or NDA written exam gets you a call to AFSB. The process runs over 5 days and broadly mirrors the Army/Navy SSB with Air Force-specific adaptations.

Day 1: Screening — OIR Test (intelligence), PP&DT (Picture Perception and Discussion Test), group narration. Only screened-in candidates proceed. Days 2–4:
  • Psychological tests — TAT (write stories for pictures), WAT (respond to words), SRT (situational responses), Self Description
  • GTO (Group Testing Officer) tasks — Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Task (PGT), Half Group Task (HGT), Individual Obstacles, Command Task, Final Group Task (FGT)
  • Personal Interview — In-depth conversation covering academics, family background, current affairs, leadership experiences, motivation for Air Force
Day 5: Conference — All assessors vote. You're either recommended or not.

For the Flying Branch, there's an additional Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) — a battery of cognitive and coordination tests done on computers and flight simulators. This was previously called PABT (Pilot Aptitude Battery Test) and can only be attempted once in a lifetime.

Training — AFA Dundigal

Selected officers join the Air Force Academy (AFA) at Dundigal, Hyderabad. It's India's premier aviation training base.

For Flying Branch: Combined flying and academic training. Student officers first complete Pre-Flying Training (ground school) before going airborne on trainer aircraft (currently the HTT-40 and HJT-16 Kiran, with PC-7 Turbo Trainer). Successful trainees then stream into fighter, transport, or helicopter fleets. For Technical and Ground Duty: Training is primarily academic and practical at AFA, covering military subjects, Air Force procedures, and branch-specific content.

Training duration varies by branch — typically 74 weeks for flying branch, shorter for some ground duty streams.

After commissioning, officers join operational bases across India (Ambala, Srinagar, Suratgarh, Pune, Gwalior, Bangalore, Chennai, etc.).

Agniveer Vayu — Airmen Entry

Agniveer Vayu is the short-service scheme for airmen (below officer rank). Two categories:

Science Stream: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English. Opens doors to technical airmen roles — aircraft mechanics, weapon fitters, electronics trades. Other Than Science: 10+2 in any stream with English. For roles in administration, accounts, logistics, police, education.

Selection: Written test (CBT) → Physical fitness test → Medical.

Agniveer service is 4 years. 25% can apply for permanent enrolment thereafter. Those not selected for permanent enrolment receive a Seva Nidhi package (lump sum) and a skill certificate.

Life in the Indian Air Force

Air Force stations are among the best-maintained military establishments in India. Accommodation at most bases is in well-planned residential areas with schools, hospitals, sports facilities, and clubs.

Flying life is intense — regular flying hours to maintain currency, instrument checks, formation flying, and operational exercises. Pilots typically fly 100–200 hours per year depending on fleet and posting. Social life at Air Force messes is known to be vibrant — formal dining-ins, informal get-togethers, sports. IAF has produced several national-level cricketers and athletes. Medical coverage under ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme) extends to family during service and post-retirement. CSD (Canteen Stores Department) provides subsidised goods — groceries, appliances, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can women join as pilots in the IAF? Yes. Women officers are commissioned into the Flying Branch and have been deployed on fighter aircraft (Mig-21, Su-30 MKI). There are no flying roles explicitly barred for women now. AFCAT-eligible women can attempt CPSS (pilot selection test) like any male candidate. How many attempts are allowed for AFCAT? There is no official attempt limit for AFCAT as long as you remain within the age limit. However, CPSS (pilot aptitude test) is a one-lifetime attempt — if you fail it, you cannot attempt again for the flying branch. What happens if you're not recommended at AFSB? A "not recommended" (NR) result at AFSB has a mandatory gap before you can reappear — typically 6 months to 1 year. There's no lifetime limit on AFSB attempts (unlike CPSS). You can prepare and reapply for subsequent cycles. Is AFCAT applicable for both Short Service Commission and Permanent Commission? AFCAT leads to Short Service Commission (SSC) for both Flying and Ground Duty branches. Technical branch officers via AFCAT get Permanent Commission. SSC officers can apply for PC conversion later, subject to vacancies and performance.
