Banking is one of the most sought-after career tracks in India's government sector — and IBPS PO is the main entry point for most public sector banks. The job itself is substantive: you handle customer relationships, credit appraisals, branch operations, and eventually move into management. The salary is competitive, transfers are manageable, and promotions are structured.

Here's what you need to know before you sit for the exam.

What is IBPS PO?

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection conducts a common recruitment process (CRP) for Probationary Officers and Management Trainees across participating public sector banks. Once selected, you join your allocated bank as a PO and undergo a training period before being confirmed.

IBPS PO is different from SBI PO — SBI conducts its own separate exam. IBPS handles all other major PSBs.

Participating Banks

The current list of banks under IBPS CRP PO/MT includes:

  • Bank of Baroda
  • Bank of India
  • Bank of Maharashtra
  • Canara Bank
  • Central Bank of India
  • Indian Bank
  • Indian Overseas Bank
  • Punjab & Sind Bank
  • Punjab National Bank
  • UCO Bank
  • Union Bank of India
Note: The participating bank list is confirmed fresh every year in the official notification. A few banks have exited and re-entered over the years, so always verify.

Eligibility

Education: Graduate in any discipline from a recognized university. Final-year students can apply with the condition that they produce the degree certificate at document verification. Age: 20–30 years as on the cut-off date mentioned in the notification. Age Relaxation:
  • OBC: +3 years (27+3 = up to 33)
  • SC/ST: +5 years (up to 35)

Exam Pattern

IBPS PO selection has three stages.

Stage 1 — Preliminary Examination

Online, 1 hour. Qualifying in nature.

SectionQuestionsMarksTime
English Language303020 min
Quantitative Aptitude353520 min
Reasoning Ability353520 min
Total10010060 min
Sectional time limits are enforced. Negative marking: 0.25 per wrong answer. Prelims score doesn't count in final merit — it only determines who gets called for Mains.

Stage 2 — Main Examination

Online + Descriptive. More comprehensive.

Objective Test (3 hours):

English Language3540
Data Analysis & Interpretation3560

Descriptive Test (30 minutes, 25 marks): Letter writing and essay. Taken online immediately after the objective test. Minimum qualifying marks apply. This section is often ignored in preparation — don't make that mistake.

Mains marks (200 + 25 = 225) are carried into the final merit.

Stage 3 — Interview

Conducted by the respective bank's board along with IBPS representatives. Carries 100 marks.

Final Merit = Mains (225) + Interview (100) = 325 marks

Minimum qualifying marks in the interview: 40% for General (35% for reserved categories).

What the Job Actually Involves

Many candidates romanticize banking without knowing the actual work. As a PO, your initial postings might involve:

  • Counter operations (cash handling, customer service)

  • Loan processing and follow-up

  • KYC verification and account maintenance

  • Eventually, credit appraisal and branch operations

The work gets progressively more responsibility-based as you move to managerial roles. Branch Manager is a genuinely impactful role — you're running a small business for the bank.

FAQ

Is IBPS PO better than IBPS Clerk for career growth? PO and Clerk have different entry scales. PO enters at Scale I (officer cadre), while Clerk enters in the clerical cadre. Clerks can be promoted to officers, but it takes time and involves an internal exam. If you're targeting officer-level work and salary, IBPS PO is the direct route. Can I choose which bank I want to join? No. Bank allocation is done by IBPS based on your merit rank, state preference, and vacancies declared by each bank. You can list bank preferences, but actual allocation isn't guaranteed. Does IBPS PO have a probation period? Yes. Typically 2 years. During this period, you'll undergo training at the bank's training college and on-the-job rotation. Confirmation is subject to satisfactory performance. How many times can I appear in IBPS PO? There's no official attempt limit stated by IBPS. You can appear as long as you meet the age and educational eligibility criteria each year.
