CTET is probably the most misunderstood exam in the government job ecosystem. Many people think passing CTET means getting a government teaching job. It doesn't — CTET is an eligibility certificate, not a selection exam. Understanding this distinction, and the ecosystem around it, helps you plan an actual teaching career, not just clear an exam.

What is CTET?

The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is conducted by CBSE on behalf of the Government of India. It certifies that you meet the minimum eligibility standard to teach in Central Government schools.

CTET is not a recruitment exam. It's a prerequisite — like having a driving licence to drive. You still need to appear in a separate recruitment exam (KVS, NVS, DSSSB, etc.) to actually get a teaching job.

Schools where CTET is required:
  • Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS) — Central Government schools
  • Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS) — Residential government schools
  • Schools under Delhi Government (DSSSB)
  • Schools run by Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD/EDMC/NDMC — now MCD)
  • Any school aided or controlled by Union Territories
  • Central Tibetan Schools Administration (CTSA)
State government schools may have their own State TET — CTET is not universally required for state government schools (e.g., UP TET for UP schools, HTET for Haryana schools, etc.).

CTET Paper I vs Paper II

CTET has two papers, and knowing which one you need is important:

PaperFor TeachingClass Level
Paper IPrimary Teacher (PRT)Class 1 to 5
Paper IIUpper Primary Teacher / TGTClass 6 to 8
You can appear in both papers if you want eligibility for both levels. Paper I — Exam Pattern:
SectionQuestionsMarks
Child Development and Pedagogy3030
Language I (Compulsory)3030
Language II (English usually)3030
Mathematics3030
Environmental Studies (EVS)3030

Paper II — Exam Pattern:
SectionQuestionsMarks
Child Development and Pedagogy (focus on 6–11 age group)3030
Language I (Compulsory)3030
Language II (English usually)3030

For Paper II, the subject-specific section is:
  • If you're a Maths/Science teacher candidate: Mathematics and Science
  • If you're a Social Studies/Humanities candidate: Social Studies/Social Sciences
Duration: 2.5 hours for each paper. No negative marking. Passing marks: Minimum 60% (90/150) for general category. 55% (82.5/150) for SC/ST/OBC and PWD.

Eligibility Requirements

Paper I (PRT eligibility)

  • 12th pass with minimum 50% marks, AND
  • Passed or appearing in final year of 2-year D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education)
OR
  • Graduation + D.El.Ed
OR
  • Graduation + B.Ed + studied Elementary Education as a compulsory subject
OR
  • Graduation with minimum 50% + B.Ed (El. Ed) — 4-year integrated course

Paper II (TGT eligibility)

  • Graduation with minimum 50% marks, AND
  • Passed or appearing in final year of B.Ed
OR
  • B.El.Ed (4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education)
OR
  • Graduation with 50% + 1-year B.Ed (Special Education)
Note: D.El.Ed is specifically required for Paper I eligibility in most cases. B.Ed is the standard requirement for Paper II. Candidates who appear without the required qualifying degree and pass CTET cannot use the certificate until they complete the required qualification.

CTET Score Validity

Lifetime validity — CTET certificates do not expire. CBSE changed the validity from 7 years to lifetime in 2021. A CTET certificate you hold from 2019 or even 2015 is still valid.

This is a significant policy advantage — you don't need to keep reappearing unless you want to improve your score (some recruitment exams use CTET marks as a component).

How CTET Leads to Actual Teaching Jobs

Route 1: Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) Teacher

KVS conducts its own recruitment exam for teachers in Kendriya Vidyalayas across India. KVS selection process:
  1. Written test (conduct by KVS directly) — General English, General Hindi, General Knowledge, Reasoning, Perspective on Education, Subject Specific
  2. CTET qualification (Paper I for PRT, Paper II for TGT) is mandatory before applying
  3. After written test: Interview/Skill test (varies by post)
KVS teacher jobs are genuinely prestigious — well-managed schools, CBSE board, good infrastructure. Teachers are central government employees.

Route 2: Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) Teacher

NVS runs Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas — residential schools in rural districts. NVS recruits TGTs and PRTs through its own exam.

CTET is required for NVS Teacher posts. NVS selection:

  1. Computer Based Test with subject + pedagogy questions

  2. CTET score as eligibility filter

NVS postings mean living on the campus (residential school), with accommodation, meals, and excellent work environment. The residential campus lifestyle is a genuine pro for candidates who prefer it.

Route 3: DSSSB Teacher (Delhi Government Schools)

As discussed in the DSSSB guide, Delhi government recruits large volumes of PRT, TGT, and PGT teachers through DSSSB.

CTET Paper I is mandatory for PRT. Paper II for TGT. DSSSB conducts its own selection test separately.

Route 4: Delhi MCD Schools

Post MCD unification, MCD schools recruit teachers through DSSSB or their own board. CTET Paper I is required for primary teacher posts.

Route 5: State Government Schools

While state schools mainly use State TET (UPTET, HTET, MPTET, etc.), some states accept CTET in lieu of State TET. Check your state's rules — some states (Meghalaya, some NE states, J&K after 2019) explicitly recognise CTET for state school recruitment.

Teacher Salary Under 7th Pay Commission

Government school teachers are among the better-paid government employees when the full package is considered:

PostPay LevelBasic Pay RangeApprox Gross (Metro)
Primary Teacher (PRT)Level 7₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400₹70,000–₹85,000
Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT)Level 8₹47,600 – ₹1,51,100₹75,000–₹95,000
Post Graduate Teacher (PGT)Level 8₹47,600 – ₹1,51,100₹80,000–₹1,00,000
Librarian (KVS)Level 7₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400₹70,000–₹85,000
For KVS teachers: Additional benefits include:
  • Free education for up to 2 children at Kendriya Vidyalaya (huge benefit — children get KVS quality education at nominal fee)
  • CGHS medical coverage
  • CSD canteen
  • Leave with full pay, including Summer vacation (May–June) as teachers — effectively 2 months of paid leave annually
  • Transfer across India (risk factor but also flexibility)
NVS teachers: Residential allowance, free accommodation on campus, food deducted at subsidised rates. Effective CTC is higher than the basic because accommodation is often free.

Is a Government Teaching Career Worth It?

For anyone who genuinely wants to teach, government school teaching is one of the best career structures in India:

  • Job security — Once confirmed, a government teacher post is effectively permanent
  • Work hours — School hours, no late evenings, structured year
  • Summer vacation — 2 months effectively, with salary
  • Pension — NPS (defined contribution) for those joining post-2004, still better than nothing
  • Progression — PRT → Senior PRT → TGT (through promotion in some schools) → PGT in some structures
The honest caution: Rural NVS postings and KVS transfers can take you far from home. Some teachers spend decades in transfers before getting a desired posting. If geographical stability is your top priority, DSSSB (Delhi-based) or state government school jobs make more sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I pass CTET, can I get a job immediately? No. CTET qualification makes you eligible to apply for teaching jobs in Central Government schools. The actual selection is through separate exams (KVS, NVS, DSSSB). You must clear those separately. How many times can I appear in CTET? There is no limit on the number of attempts for CTET. You can appear every time CTET is conducted (twice a year — July and December cycles) regardless of how many times you've already appeared. Is D.El.Ed mandatory for CTET Paper I, or can I appear with just B.Ed? B.Ed alone is now recognised in some states for primary teaching eligibility following RTE Act amendments. For CTET specifically, the CBSE notification each year specifies the qualifying degrees. Currently, B.Ed is accepted for Paper I in limited circumstances — D.El.Ed remains the primary qualifying degree for Paper I. Read the notification carefully before applying. Do private CBSE schools also require CTET? Many do, especially recognised unaided private schools in Delhi and other metros. CTET is increasingly becoming a benchmark even for private school recruitment, though it's not legally mandatory for private schools in most states.
