Airports Authority of India (AAI) manages 137 airports across the country, including major international airports (before they were privatized under PPP), all domestic airports, and the entire air traffic management system of Indian airspace. If you've ever flown within India, the Air Traffic Controllers guiding your plane were AAI employees.

AAI recruitment doesn't get the same attention as SSC or UPSC, but the jobs are excellent — especially for engineering graduates and candidates with technical backgrounds. The salary is at PSU-level (comparable to NTPC, GAIL, BHEL), the work is in the aviation sector, and postings are at airports across the country.

The Star Post: Junior Executive (ATC) — Air Traffic Controller

Air Traffic Controller is the most prestigious and sought-after AAI post. ATCs manage the movement of aircraft on the ground and in the air, ensuring safe separation between flights. It's a high-responsibility, high-skill job that's internationally recognized.

Eligibility:
  • B.Tech / B.E. in any engineering discipline (for ATC specifically, electronics, electrical, and CS backgrounds are common, but any engineering branch qualifies)
  • Valid GATE score in the relevant discipline
  • Age: Generally up to 27 years (with standard relaxations)
  • Medical fitness: Stringent aviation medical standards (visual acuity 6/6, color vision, no hearing deficiency)
Note on ATC medical standards: ATC candidates must pass a Class II aviation medical examination conducted by DGCA-approved medical examiners. This is stricter than standard government medical tests — particularly for vision (6/6 in each eye without glasses for some categories) and hearing. Get your vision checked before applying.

GATE-Based Recruitment

Since 2018, AAI has been recruiting Junior Executives primarily through GATE scores. The process:

  1. Appear for GATE in the relevant discipline (ECE, EEE, CSE, CE, ME depending on the post)
  2. AAI publishes a notification inviting applications from GATE-qualified candidates
  3. Shortlisting based on GATE score (typically 2–3x the vacancy number)
  4. Personal Interview conducted by AAI (for technical assessment)
  5. Medical examination
  6. Final merit = GATE score + Interview performance
Why GATE? GATE-based recruitment ensures AAI gets technically sound candidates without having to conduct its own written exam. For candidates, a single GATE score can open doors to AAI, NTPC, GAIL, IOCL, PGCIL, and other PSUs simultaneously.

Salary Structure (IDA Pattern)

AAI follows Industrial DA (IDA) pay scales, which are different from Central Government CDA scales. IDA scales are generally more generous:

Junior Executive (E-1 Level)

ComponentAmount (₹/month)
Basic Pay₹40,000
Dearness Allowance (~45% IDA)₹18,000
HRA (metro city)₹10,800
HRA (non-metro)₹8,000
Perks & Allowances (47.5% of basic)₹19,000
Transport Allowance₹3,600
Approx. Gross (metro)₹90,000–₹1,00,000
In-hand salary for a fresh JE at a metro airport: approximately ₹62,000–₹70,000 per month.

This is significantly higher than what most other government/PSU jobs offer at the entry level. AAI salaries are comparable to top Maharatna PSUs.

Additional Benefits

  • Performance Related Pay (PRP): 100–200% of basic pay annually, based on company and individual performance
  • Medical reimbursement: Comprehensive medical coverage for self and family
  • Leave Travel Concession: Including air travel LTC (you're in the aviation sector, after all)
  • Housing: Quarters available at some airport locations, or full HRA
  • Superannuation benefits: CPF + Gratuity + Post-retirement medical scheme
  • Free/subsidized air travel: AAI employees get concessions on domestic air travel
The PRP alone adds ₹4–8 lakh annually to your compensation, making the total CTC for a Junior Executive approximately ₹14–18 lakh in the first year.

Career Progression

LevelDesignationPay Scale (IDA)Typical Timeline
E-1Junior Executive₹40,000–₹1,40,000Entry
E-2Executive₹50,000–₹1,60,0004 years
E-3Manager₹60,000–₹1,80,0008–9 years
E-4Senior Manager₹70,000–₹2,00,00012–13 years
E-5Deputy General Manager₹80,000–₹2,20,00016–18 years
E-6Joint General Manager₹90,000–₹2,40,00020–22 years
E-7General Manager₹1,00,000–₹2,60,00024–28 years
Beyond GM, there are Executive Director, Member (Board), and Chairman positions — but those are typically filled at the senior leadership level.

For ATC officers specifically, the career path includes ratings for different types of air traffic control (aerodrome, approach, area control) and postings at increasingly complex airports.

Posting Locations

AAI operates airports across India, so postings can be anywhere. However, major airports offer the most interesting work:

Tier 1 airports (busiest, most complex ATC):
  • Delhi (IGI)
  • Mumbai (CSIA)
  • Bengaluru (KIA)
  • Hyderabad (RGIA)
  • Chennai
  • Kolkata
Tier 2 airports (growing cities):
  • Goa, Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Bhubaneswar, Varanasi
Remote/smaller airports:
  • Agatti, Lengpui (Mizoram), Dimapur, Silchar, Port Blair, Leh
Initial postings may be at smaller airports where you gain experience before moving to busier ones. For ATC officers, training starts at the AAI Civil Aviation Training College in Allahabad (Prayagraj) before the first operational posting.

ATC Training

Junior Executive (ATC) appointees undergo extensive training:

  1. Foundation training: General aviation knowledge, meteorology, communications, navigation
  2. Rating training: Specific air traffic control procedures (aerodrome control, approach control, area control)
  3. On-the-job training (OJT): At assigned airport under supervision of a rated controller
  4. Rating examination: Conducted by DGCA — you must pass to independently control traffic
The entire training-to-rating process takes 12–18 months. During this period, you receive full salary. DGCA-rated Indian ATCs have international recognition and can work globally after meeting local requirements.

How to Prepare

For GATE

GATE preparation is your primary focus since AAI recruitment is GATE-score based:

  • ECE/EEE candidates (for ATC/Electronics posts): Focus on networks, signals and systems, electronic devices, communications, control systems, digital electronics
  • CS/IT candidates: Data structures, algorithms, DBMS, OS, computer networks, TOC
  • Civil candidates: Structural mechanics, geotechnical, transportation, environmental engineering
  • Target score: Top 200–500 rank in your discipline gives a strong chance of AAI selection

For Interview

AAI interviews are technically focused. Expect questions on:

  • Core engineering subjects (based on your branch)

  • Aviation basics (for ATC — how airports work, types of airspace, basic ATC concepts)

  • Current affairs related to civil aviation

  • General awareness about AAI's operations

Medical Preparation (ATC Specific)

Get a preliminary eye and hearing check before investing in GATE preparation. ATC medical standards are non-negotiable:

  • Visual acuity: 6/9 in each eye (correctable to 6/6) — standards have been slightly relaxed in recent years, but confirm current DGCA norms

  • Color vision: Normal (Ishihara test)

  • Hearing: Normal audiogram

  • General fitness: No systemic disease that could cause sudden incapacitation

Alternative Entry: Non-GATE Posts

Not all AAI posts require GATE. The following are recruited through AAI's own exam:

  • Senior Assistant (Accounts): B.Com graduates, written exam + interview
  • Senior Assistant (Hindi): MA Hindi, written exam + interview
  • Junior Executive (Fire Service): Engineering degree + fire service certification

Is AAI Worth Targeting?

For engineering graduates, AAI is among the top 5 PSU employers in terms of total compensation, work profile, and growth potential. The ATC role in particular offers something unique — a specialized, internationally recognized skill set with genuine operational responsibility. The salary comfortably exceeds most government jobs at the same qualification level, and the aviation sector adds a premium to the overall career value.

The catch is that GATE preparation requires serious effort, and the medical standards for ATC are stringent. But if you clear both hurdles, AAI offers one of the best government-sector careers available to engineering graduates in India.
