The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination admit card — or e-Admit Card as UPSC officially calls it — is released approximately three weeks before the exam. Unlike SSC where regional offices handle distribution, UPSC manages everything centrally through its own website. The process is straightforward, but the stakes are high enough that getting it right matters.

Here is everything you need to know.

UPSC Prelims Admit Card Release Schedule

UPSC typically follows this pattern:

EventTimeline
Admit Card release18-21 days before exam
Last date to downloadUp to exam day (but download early)
Prelims ExamUsually last Sunday of May or first Sunday of June
UPSC announces the admit card availability through a notification on upsc.gov.in. The notification appears under "What's New" or "Notices" section.

How to Download UPSC Prelims Admit Card

Step 1: Go to upsc.gov.in Step 2: Click on "e-Admit Card" in the left sidebar or top navigation Step 3: Select "Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, [Year]" from the list of active examinations Step 4: Choose your login method:
  • Registration ID / Roll Number: Enter either one
  • Date of Birth: In DD/MM/YYYY format
Step 5: A captcha will appear. Enter it carefully — UPSC's captcha is case-sensitive. Step 6: Click "Submit." Your admit card will appear on screen. Step 7: Click "Print e-Admit Card." This opens the printable version. Step 8: Use Ctrl+P to print. Save a PDF copy as backup. Important: UPSC's website uses a session timeout. If you take too long on any step, the session expires and you have to start over. Work quickly through the screens.

What the UPSC Admit Card Contains

Your UPSC Prelims e-Admit Card will show:

  • Candidate Name and Roll Number
  • Examination Name and Year
  • Date of Examination (single day, two sessions)
  • Venue Name and Address (your exam centre)
  • Reporting Time (typically 9:00 AM for Paper I, 2:00 PM for Paper II)
  • Photograph (as uploaded during application)
  • Signature (as uploaded during application)
  • Important instructions and guidelines
One key difference from SSC: UPSC Prelims has TWO papers on the same day. Paper I (General Studies) in the morning session and Paper II (CSAT) in the afternoon session. Your admit card covers both papers.

Verification Checklist

Go through each detail systematically:

Name spelling: Must exactly match your government-issued ID. UPSC is stricter about this than most exam bodies. "Rahul Singh" on the admit card and "Rahul Kumar Singh" on Aadhaar could be a problem. Photograph quality: UPSC's system sometimes compresses uploaded photos, making them blurry. If the photo is unrecognisable, carry extra passport-size photographs and your original ID proof. Centre address: UPSC Prelims centres are spread across major cities. Your centre may not be in the city you expected — UPSC allots centres based on preference and availability. Note the exact address and check the route in advance. Date and time: Confirm the exam date matches the official UPSC calendar. UPSC rarely changes dates, but it has happened (notably during COVID years).

What to Carry

Mandatory

ItemQuantity
e-Admit Card (printed)2-3 copies
Photo ID proof (original)1 (Aadhaar/Passport/Voter ID/DL)
Photo ID proof (photocopy)1 self-attested
Passport-size photos3-4 extra
Black ballpoint pen2-3 (for OMR sheet)

Critical Note on Pens

UPSC Prelims uses an OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) sheet, not a computer. You need a black ballpoint pen to fill in the bubbles. Do not use gel pen, blue pen, or pencil. Carry at least 2-3 pens in case one runs out or does not work.

Allowed

  • Transparent water bottle (label removed)
  • Analog watch (strongly recommended since wall clocks may not be visible)
  • Prescribed medicines with doctor's certificate

Prohibited

  • Mobile phones
  • Digital watches, smartwatches
  • Calculators
  • Electronic devices of any kind
  • Textbooks, notes, or blank paper
  • Food items (unless medically required with proof)
UPSC exam centres have strict security. Many centres do not have safe storage for your phone, so leaving it at home or with someone outside the centre is advisable.

Handling Admit Card Issues

Photo Not Displaying

Contact UPSC's Facilitation Counter at their office in New Delhi (Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road) or call the helpline numbers listed on the upsc.gov.in contact page. For remote candidates, send an email to upsc-perm@nic.in with your Registration ID and the issue description.

Name Mismatch

UPSC does not easily allow name corrections after the application deadline. If the mismatch is minor (middle name included/excluded), carry multiple ID proofs and explain to the invigilator. For major mismatches, you need to contact UPSC well in advance.

Centre Not Accessible

If your allotted centre has become inaccessible (flooding, construction, etc.), UPSC usually issues a revised admit card with an alternate centre. Check the website daily in the week before the exam for such updates.

Cannot Download the Admit Card

Clear your browser cache, try a different browser (Chrome/Firefox), or use a different device. UPSC's website sometimes has compatibility issues with certain browsers. If the problem persists, it could mean your application had an issue — contact UPSC immediately.

Exam Day Logistics

Paper I (General Studies) — Morning Session

TimeActivity
7:30 AMLeave for centre
8:00-8:30 AMArrive at centre (gates typically open 90 minutes before exam)
8:30-9:15 AMEntry verification, frisking, seating
9:15-9:30 AMDistribution of OMR sheet and question booklet
9:30 AMPaper I begins
11:30 AMPaper I ends (2 hours)

Gap Between Papers

You get roughly 2-2.5 hours between Paper I ending and Paper II starting. Use this time wisely:
  • Have a light lunch (carry your own food since centre canteens are crowded)
  • Do not discuss Paper I answers with other candidates — it creates unnecessary anxiety
  • Review CSAT formulas if needed
  • Rest mentally

Paper II (CSAT) — Afternoon Session

TimeActivity
1:30-2:00 PMRe-entry and verification
2:00-2:15 PMOMR sheet and question booklet distribution
2:15 PMPaper II begins
4:15 PMPaper II ends (2 hours)

The Question Booklet Code Trap

UPSC prints question papers in four sets (A, B, C, D), each with the same questions in different order. When filling your OMR sheet, you must correctly bubble the Question Booklet Series printed on your question paper. If you fill the wrong series code, your OMR sheet will be evaluated against the wrong answer key, and your score will be devastatingly wrong.

Every year, some candidates make this mistake. It is the single most avoidable disaster in the exam. Triple-check your booklet series code.

After the Exam

Keep your admit card safely. You will need the Roll Number for:

  • Checking your result (whenever UPSC releases it, typically 40-50 days after Prelims)

  • Downloading your Mains admit card if you qualify

  • All subsequent stages — Mains, Interview, Document Verification

Store a digital copy on your phone, email it to yourself, and keep the physical copy in a safe place. The UPSC journey from Prelims to final selection can span 10-12 months, and you will reference this document multiple times.
