The structure has changed significantly over the last few years, and if you're still going by old study plans, you might be covering sections that don't carry the same weight anymore.

Exam Structure Overview
SSC CGL is conducted in two tiers now (earlier it was four). The Staff Selection Commission simplified the pattern starting from 2023, and this structure is being followed for current recruitment cycles as well.

Important Changes in Recent Years
What changed in 2022-23 restructuring:- Tier III (Descriptive) was scrapped entirely
- Tier IV (Skill test/Computer proficiency) was merged into Tier II as Paper I Session III
- Tier I now serves purely as a screening stage; marks are not counted for final merit
- Final merit is based only on Tier II marks
- Tier I cutoff varies by category (General/OBC/SC/ST) and post category
- Tier II marks are what determine your final rank and post allotment

Preparation Approach
For Tier I, the goal is just to clear the cutoff — it doesn't count in your merit. So don't over-invest time here. Aim to clear it comfortably and focus your real preparation on Tier II.
For Tier II Paper I, the English Language section carries 135 marks — the highest among all sections. Most candidates underestimate English and end up losing ranks here. GK in Tier II is more detailed than Tier I GK, with more focus on static topics.
For statistical posts, Statistics (Paper II/III) needs separate focused preparation since it covers college-level statistical theory.
