SSC CGL is one of those exams where a lot of aspirants spend months preparing without really understanding what the actual exam pattern looks like. The structure has changed significantly over the last few years, and if you're still going by old study plans, you might be covering sections that don't carry the same weight anymore.

Here's the complete breakdown — tier by tier, section by section.

Exam Structure Overview

SSC CGL is conducted in two tiers now (earlier it was four). The Staff Selection Commission simplified the pattern starting from 2023, and this structure is being followed for current recruitment cycles as well.

Important Changes in Recent Years

What changed in 2022-23 restructuring:
  • Tier III (Descriptive) was scrapped entirely
  • Tier IV (Skill test/Computer proficiency) was merged into Tier II as Paper I Session III
  • Tier I now serves purely as a screening stage; marks are not counted for final merit
  • Final merit is based only on Tier II marks
Current cutoff pattern:
  • Tier I cutoff varies by category (General/OBC/SC/ST) and post category
  • Tier II marks are what determine your final rank and post allotment

Preparation Approach

For Tier I, the goal is just to clear the cutoff — it doesn't count in your merit. So don't over-invest time here. Aim to clear it comfortably and focus your real preparation on Tier II.

For Tier II Paper I, the English Language section carries 135 marks — the highest among all sections. Most candidates underestimate English and end up losing ranks here. GK in Tier II is more detailed than Tier I GK, with more focus on static topics.

For statistical posts, Statistics (Paper II/III) needs separate focused preparation since it covers college-level statistical theory.

FAQ

Is Tier I score counted for final merit in SSC CGL?

No. Since the 2022-23 restructuring, Tier I is only a qualifying stage. Your final merit is determined entirely by your Tier II performance.

Can I attempt Tier II without appearing in Tier I?

No, you must qualify Tier I first. Only candidates shortlisted from Tier I are eligible to appear in Tier II.

What is the negative marking in Tier II Paper I?

Negative marking of 1 mark per wrong answer applies to all sections except the Computer Knowledge module (Session III of Paper I).

How is post allotment done in SSC CGL?

Post allotment is based on your Tier II merit rank, your post preferences filled during document verification, and vacancies available for each post in each department.
