SBI PO Exam Pattern 2025: Prelims, Mains, Group Exercise and Interview
Complete SBI PO exam pattern covering Prelims structure, Mains objective and descriptive sections, Group Exercise and Interview stage, how it differs from IBPS PO, and sectional cutoffs.
SBI PO is widely considered the most prestigious bank PO recruitment in the country. The competition is intense — lakhs of graduates apply for a few thousand vacancies at the State Bank of India, the largest public sector bank in India. The selection process is more involved than most bank exams, with a Group Exercise round that IBPS PO doesn't have.
Selection Process Overview
- Preliminary Examination — Online, objective (screening stage)
- Main Examination — Online objective + descriptive (merit stage)
- Group Exercise (GE) and Interview — Final selection stage
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination
100 questions | 100 marks | 1 hourEach section has its own time limit — you cannot use time from one section for another.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
There are sectional cutoffs — clearing just the overall total isn't enough. Each section has its own minimum qualifying marks that vary by category (General, SC, ST, OBC, PwD).
SBI shortlists approximately 10-12 times the number of vacancies for Mains from Prelims.
What Each Section Tests
English Language: Reading comprehension (typically one passage with 6-8 questions), cloze test, error detection, sentence improvement, vocabulary (fill in blanks with appropriate words), para jumbles. Quantitative Aptitude: Number series (identify missing or wrong term), Data Interpretation (2 sets — table, chart, caselet), simplification/approximation, arithmetic word problems (profit-loss, SI/CI, percentage, ratio, time-work, time-speed), quadratic equations. Reasoning Ability: Puzzles and seating arrangements dominate (around 50-60% of the section), syllogisms, inequalities, blood relations, coding-decoding, direction sense, input-output, data sufficiency.Stage 2: Main Examination
Mains has two components — online objective and descriptive. Both are held on the same day.
Mains Objective Test
155 questions | 200 marks | 3 hoursSectional timing applies.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning & Computer Aptitude | 45 | 60 | 60 minutes |
| Data Analysis & Interpretation | 35 | 60 | 45 minutes |
| General/Economy/Banking Awareness | 40 | 40 | 35 minutes |
| English Language | 35 | 40 | 40 minutes |
Mains Descriptive Test
50 marks | 30 minutesThis is notably different from IBPS PO — SBI PO's descriptive paper is 50 marks (vs 25 marks in IBPS PO).
The descriptive paper typically requires:
- Letter Writing (25 marks): Formal/official letter relevant to banking context — complaint to bank manager, application for loan, formal business correspondence
- Essay Writing (25 marks): Economic topics, social issues, banking sector developments, government policies
You type on screen. Grammar, clarity, structure, word count adherence, and relevance to topic are all evaluated.
The descriptive paper is evaluated only for candidates who clear the objective section cutoff.
Sectional Cutoffs in Mains
SBI declares separate cutoffs for each section of the Mains objective paper. You must clear:
- Overall Mains cutoff
- Sectional cutoffs for each of the 4 sections
Both conditions must be met simultaneously.
