Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) teacher recruitment is one of the most popular teaching exams in India. KVS recruits for three teaching posts — PRT (Primary Teacher), TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher), and PGT (Post Graduate Teacher) — across its 1,250+ Kendriya Vidyalayas nationwide.

The exam pattern was revised significantly in recent cycles, and if you're preparing based on old patterns, you might be allocating your time to the wrong sections. Here's the current structure for all three posts.

The written test is used for shortlisting, and the final merit is based on all three components combined. Let's break down each stage.

Written Test — PRT (Primary Teacher)

Total: 150 questions | 150 marks | 150 minutes

There is no negative marking in the KVS written test. This is a significant advantage — you should attempt every single question.

Part IQuantitative Aptitude1010
Part IIPerspectives on Education & Leadership2020
Part IIISubject-Specific (Primary Level Content)6060
Part IVReserved for Demo Teaching + Interview10
Part I (60 marks) covers general aptitude. The Hindi and English sections test basic grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension. GK focuses on current affairs, static GK, and basic Indian polity/geography. Reasoning and Quant are at an easier level compared to banking or SSC exams. Part II (20 marks) is unique to KVS and tests your understanding of education — NEP 2020, Right to Education Act 2009, pedagogical concepts (constructivism, child-centered education), inclusive education, and KVS-specific organizational knowledge. Part III (60 marks) tests subject knowledge at the primary level across Mathematics, EVS, English, and Hindi. Difficulty is at Classes I-V NCERT level, but questions test your ability to teach these concepts, not just recall them.

Written Test — TGT and PGT

TGT and PGT follow the exact same paper structure as PRT — 150 questions, 150 marks, 150 minutes, same four parts, no negative marking. The only difference is in Part III (Subject-Specific):
  • TGT: Part III tests your chosen subject (English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, etc.) at Classes VI-X level with pedagogy integration — teaching methodology, student misconceptions, and activity-based learning alongside content knowledge.
  • PGT: Part III tests at Classes XI-XII level with post-graduation-level depth. Subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, English, Hindi, History, Geography, Economics, Commerce, Computer Science, and more. The PGT paper is noticeably harder, with emphasis shifting toward subject expertise over pedagogy.

Demo Teaching — 40 Marks

Candidates who qualify the written test cutoff are called for a Demo Teaching session.

FAQ

Is CTET mandatory for all KVS teaching posts?

CTET is mandatory for PRT (Paper I) and TGT (Paper II) posts. It is not required for PGT posts. Your CTET certificate must be valid at the time of application.

Is there negative marking in the KVS exam?

No. There is no negative marking in the KVS written test for any post (PRT, TGT, or PGT). You should attempt all 150 questions.

Can B.Ed graduates without CTET apply for KVS TGT?

No. CTET Paper II qualification is a mandatory eligibility condition for TGT posts. You must clear CTET before applying or at least have a valid CTET score by the application deadline.

How is KVS different from NVS (Navodaya) teacher recruitment?

Both recruit for central government schools, but KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya) schools are typically in urban areas near central government offices and defense establishments, while NVS (Navodaya Vidyalaya) schools are in rural/semi-urban areas. The exam patterns are similar but conducted separately by their respective organizations.
