IBPS PO recruitment follows a three-stage selection process. A lot of candidates clear Prelims without really knowing what Mains demands, and then struggle in the second stage. This breakdown covers everything — the exact structure, marking scheme, what the descriptive paper involves, and how the final merit list is actually calculated.

Selection Process at a Glance

  1. Prelims — Online objective test (screening stage)
  2. Mains — Online objective + descriptive test (merit stage)
  3. Interview — Conducted by participating banks under IBPS coordination

Stage 1: Prelims

Total: 100 questions | 100 marks | 60 minutes

Each section has its own time limit — you cannot carry over unused time from one section to another.

SectionQuestionsMarksTime

Marking scheme: +1 for correct, -0.25 for wrong (1/4 negative marking).

Prelims has sectional cutoffs — you must clear the minimum marks threshold in each section, not just the overall cutoff. This means you can't compensate a weak section by scoring heavily in another.

Final score = Mains (weighted) + Interview (weighted)
ComponentWeightage
Mains (Objective + Descriptive)80%
Interview20%
Mains marks out of 225 (200 objective + 25 descriptive) are scaled to 80, and interview marks out of 100 are scaled to 20. These are added to get the final score out of 100.
