How to Become a CBI Officer: SSC CGL, UPSC and Deputation Routes — Eligibility and Career
Complete guide to becoming a CBI officer — Sub-Inspector CBI through SSC CGL, DSP CBI through UPSC CSE, deputation from IPS/state police, CBI structure, daily investigation work, and career growth.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is India's premier investigating agency — handling the most high-profile cases in the country, from political corruption scandals to economic frauds worth thousands of crores. CBI officers investigate cases that state police can't or won't touch, and they work under the direct supervision of courts in many instances.
Here's every route to joining the CBI, what the investigation work actually involves, and how the career progresses.
CBI Is NOT a Cadre — It's a Posting
The first thing to understand: CBI is not a separate service or cadre like IAS or IPS. CBI officers come from three sources:
- Direct recruitment through SSC CGL (Sub-Inspector level)
- UPSC CSE — IPS officers deputed to CBI as DSP/SP and above
- Deputation from state police, IRS, and other central services
Route 1: Sub-Inspector CBI via SSC CGL
This is the only direct recruitment route to CBI. SSC CGL recruits Sub-Inspectors for CBI every year.

Route 2: DSP CBI via UPSC CSE (IPS Route)
IPS officers can be deputed to CBI as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) or Superintendent of Police (SP). This is how most CBI leadership positions are filled.

Route 3: Deputation from State Police and Other Services
CBI also takes officers on deputation from:
- State Police — DSPs and SPs from state police can be deputed to CBI
- IRS (Income Tax) — For economic offence cases
- IB (Intelligence Bureau) — For intelligence-linked investigations
- Customs — For smuggling and economic fraud cases
Deputation is not automatic — officers apply when CBI invites nominations, and selection depends on service record, ACR (Annual Confidential Report), and CBI's requirements.
