Government Jobs for Engineering Graduates: PSU, IES, SSC JE, ISRO, and More
Complete guide to government jobs for engineers — GATE-based PSU recruitment, UPSC IES, SSC JE, ISRO/DRDO, Railway JE, defence technical entries, and salary comparison.
Engineering graduates have more specialized government job options than almost any other stream. While they can compete in all general exams (SSC CGL, IBPS, State PSC), there are exclusive government sector opportunities that require an engineering degree and pay significantly more.
The trade-off: the competition for these specialized roles is intense, particularly for premium PSUs through GATE.
Two Main Tracks: Technical and Administrative
Technical Track: Posts that use your engineering knowledge — PSU technical roles, ISRO/DRDO scientist, SSC JE, Railway JE, UPSC IES. Your degree matters, your technical knowledge is tested. Administrative Track: IAS/IPS through UPSC CSE, SSC CGL (non-technical posts), Banking — your engineering degree qualifies you but isn't directly tested. You compete with graduates from all streams. Most engineering aspirants consider the technical track first. The salaries are strong and the syllabus leverages what you already studied.
GATE-Based PSU Recruitment: The Premier Path
Getting into a top PSU through GATE is the dream combination of good salary, job security, and technical work. Most Navratna and Maharatna PSUs recruit through GATE score.
How It Works
- Appear in GATE for your engineering discipline (CE, ME, EE, EC, CS/IT, CH, IN, etc.)
- PSUs release notifications announcing they'll accept GATE [year] scores
- Apply to individual PSUs within their application window
- Shortlisting is based on GATE score
- Final selection is through Group Discussion and Personal Interview at most PSUs

ONGC additionally offers free fuel (LPG quota), subsidized canteen, and cash-equivalent benefits that push the effective package higher.
UPSC Engineering Services Exam (IES/ESE)
The UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is the central government's direct recruitment for engineering officers. It's considered the "IAS equivalent" for engineers within the technical ministries.
Services recruited through ESE:- Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE)
- Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE)
- Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME)
- Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers (IRSSE)
- Indian Service of Engineers (CPWD, CWC, etc.)
- Central Engineering Service (Roads)
- Central Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Service
- Border Roads Engineering Service
The IES route is less competitive than PSU GATE for pure salary, but offers administrative power and a faster path to senior government positions. An IES officer can reach Director/Chief Engineer level running major infrastructure projects.
SSC Junior Engineer (SSC JE)
SSC JE is the most accessible government engineering job — minimum qualification is a diploma or degree in Civil/Electrical/Mechanical/Quantity Surveying & Contract engineering.
Departments where SSC JE recruits:- CPWD (Central Public Works Department) — Civil and Electrical
- MES (Military Engineering Service) — Civil and Electrical
- CEMILAC, BRO (Border Roads Organization)
- Central Water Commission (CWC) — Civil
- CSIR (Mechanical)
- Department of Post
State PWD and CPWD Junior Engineer
State Public Works Departments recruit JEs through state PSBs or state PSC. Similar pay level to SSC JE but posting is within the state. For engineers who don't want to relocate, state JE jobs are genuinely good options.
Railway Engineering Posts
Indian Railways is one of the largest employers of engineers in government:
Junior Engineer (JE): Recruited through RRB JE exam. Level 6 pay (₹35,400 basic). Departments include Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Signal & Telecom, IT. Senior Section Engineer (SSE): Level 7 (₹44,900 basic). Recruited through RRB SSE, also internal promotion path for JEs. Railway Officers (Group A): Through UPSC (IES route for IRSE, IRSEE, etc.) or UPSC SCRA (discontinued) — now mainly through IES. Railway additional perks: Free travel passes (for self and family) across Indian Railways, accommodation at station facilities, railway medical scheme (RELHS).ISRO and DRDO: The Prestigious Science Agencies
ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation)
ISRO recruits Scientist/Engineer SC (entry level) through its own centralized exam (ISRO Centralized Recruitment Board — ICRB). No GATE score required directly, though GATE-qualified candidates may be preferentially considered.
Disciplines recruited: ME, EE, EC, CS, CE, CH, and some science branches (Physics, Chemistry, Maths). Pay: Level 10 (₹56,100 basic) — senior to SSC JE and Railway JE. Gross ₹1,05,000-₹1,10,000/month. Why it's special: World-class work (Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan, Gaganyaan), excellent campus living at VSSC/Thiruvananthapuram, SDSC/Sriharikota, URSC/Bengaluru, SAC/Ahmedabad. Research publications. Promotion path to Scientist/Engineer SD, SE, SF, SG (each with higher pay).DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation)
DRDO recruits through its own exam (SET — Scientist Entry Test) for Scientist B posts (Level 10, same as ISRO). Some recruitment also happens through GATE.
Areas: Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science, Metallurgy, Aeronautics, Naval systems. The work culture at DRDO varies significantly by laboratory. Some are high-activity R&D environments; others are more administrative. City of posting depends on which DRDO lab you're assigned to.
Defence Technical Entries: Engineering + Military Service
