Geo Location QR Code — Share GPS Coordinates
Create a geo location QR code to share exact GPS coordinates. Opens in the default maps app. Free QR generator at QRMax.
A geo location QR code encodes GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude) so scanners can open the exact spot in their maps app. Perfect for guiding people to locations without an address. Create one at QRMax.
What It Does
The QR code encodes a geo: URI with latitude and longitude. When scanned, it opens the device's default maps application and drops a pin at the specified coordinates.
Common Use Cases
| Use Case | Example |
|---|---|
| Trailheads & parks | Guide hikers to starting points without street addresses |
| Construction sites | Share exact site coordinates with contractors |
| Event venues | Direct attendees to the entrance of large venues |
| Geocaching | Encode cache coordinates |
| Emergency rally points | Mark assembly locations on safety signage |
How to Create a Geo Location QR Code
- Choose "Geo Location" type — Open QRMax and select the geo location option.
- Enter coordinates — Input latitude and longitude (e.g., 40.7128, -74.0060) or search for a place.
- Customize & download — Add colors and a location pin icon, then export.
Practical Tips
- Use high precision — Include at least 4 decimal places for accuracy to about 11 meters.
- Add a label near the QR — Print "Scan for Directions" so users know what to expect.
- Test the pin drop — Verify the coordinates land exactly where you intend before printing.
Which maps app opens?
The device's default maps app opens — Google Maps on most Android devices, Apple Maps on iPhones. Users can change their default.
Can I add a location name to the QR?
The geo: URI supports an optional query parameter for the place name, which some maps apps display as a label on the pin.
Is this the same as a Google Maps QR?
No. A geo QR uses raw coordinates and opens in any maps app. A Google Maps QR encodes a Google Maps URL and always opens in Google Maps.
