QR codes don't have to look like generic black-and-white grids. Modern generators like QRMax let you customize dot shapes, corner markers, frames, colors, and gradients — all while maintaining scannability.

Dot Styles

The "modules" (data squares) can be rendered in different shapes:

Dot StyleLookBest For
Square (default)Classic gridTraditional, corporate
Rounded squareSofter edgesModern brands
Circle / dotOrganic, playfulLifestyle brands, events
DiamondAngular, boldTech, gaming
StarDecorativePromotions, invitations
Vertical barsLined textureMinimalist design
Horizontal barsLined textureArtistic layouts
All styles scan identically — the scanner reads the module positions, not their shapes. As long as each module's center point is detectable, the code works.

Corner Markers (Finder Patterns)

The three large squares in the corners of every QR code are called finder patterns. They help the scanner orient the code. You can customize:

  • Outer border shape: Square, rounded, circle, diamond
  • Inner dot shape: Square, rounded, circle, diamond
  • Corner colors: Can differ from the data module color
Rule: Keep finder patterns visually distinct from data modules. They need to stand out so the scanner can locate them quickly.

Frames and Call-to-Action

Adding a frame around your QR code with a text label increases scan rates significantly:

Frame StyleText ExampleUse Case
Bottom banner"Scan Me"General purpose
Top + bottom"Menu" / "Scan to Order"Restaurants
Full border"Get 20% Off"Promotions
Bubble callout"Free WiFi"Hospitality
Badge style"Learn More"Product packaging
Frames don't affect scannability — they sit outside the quiet zone. Just ensure the quiet zone (white border between frame and QR modules) is maintained.

Color Gradients

You can apply gradients to QR code modules:

Gradient TypeEffect
Linear (top to bottom)Smooth color transition
Linear (left to right)Horizontal color flow
Radial (center out)Focus effect on center
Caution: The darkest point of the gradient must maintain sufficient contrast against the background (minimum 4:1 ratio). Test at the lightest end of the gradient — that's where scanning is most likely to fail.

Background Customization

Beyond solid colors, you can:

  • Use a very light background pattern — keep it subtle enough not to interfere with module detection
  • Add a background image — the QR code is overlaid with semi-transparent modules. Risky; test thoroughly
  • Use transparency — export as PNG with transparent background for overlaying on existing designs

Do custom shapes reduce scan reliability?

No, as long as contrast and sizing rules are met. The scanner reads module center positions and finder patterns, not the exact shape of each module.

Can I animate a QR code?

Animated QR codes (GIFs) work on digital screens but not in print. Each frame must be a valid QR code. QRMax supports animated QR export for digital use.

What's the most scannable custom style?

Rounded squares with rounded corners. They're visually distinct from the default and maintain excellent scannability. Avoid overly decorative styles (stars, hearts) for small QR codes.
