Need to censor faces, license plates, or sensitive data in a photo? The MyPDF Pixelate Image tool applies mosaic pixelation to selected areas or the entire image — completely in your browser.
How to Pixelate an Image
- Upload your image (JPG, PNG, WebP, or BMP).
- Select the area to pixelate and adjust the pixel block size.
- Download the censored image instantly.
Pixelation vs. Blur Comparison
| Method | Privacy Level | Reversible? | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixelation | High | No | Faces, text, license plates |
| Gaussian blur | Medium | Potentially | Background softening |
| Black bar overlay | Highest | No | Legal redaction |
| Color fill | Highest | No | Complete removal |
Practical Tips
- Use larger pixel blocks (20-40 px) for stronger censoring — small blocks can sometimes be reverse-engineered.
- Pixelate before sharing on social media to protect the privacy of bystanders or minors in photos.
- Save as PNG to avoid JPG compression artifacts that could partially smooth the pixelation.
Can pixelation be reversed?
Unlike blur, pixelation permanently destroys the underlying detail. With a sufficiently large block size, the original content cannot be recovered.
How big should the pixel blocks be?
For faces, use at least 15-20 px blocks. For text, 10-15 px is usually enough. Test by zooming in to verify the content is unreadable.
