What Are PDF Page Labels?

PDF page labels are the numbers that appear in your PDF viewer's page navigation (the "Page X of Y" indicator). They're separate from printed page numbers — you can have page label "iv" (Roman numeral 4) on the 4th page of the file while the printed page shows no number at all.

Why Use Custom Page Labels?

Professional documents often use multiple numbering schemes:

SectionPage LabelsPhysical Pages
Cover— (no label)Page 1 of file
Table of Contentsi, ii, iii, ivPages 2-5 of file
Chapter 11, 2, 3, ...Pages 6+ of file
Appendix AA-1, A-2, A-3Later pages
Without page labels, the PDF viewer shows "Page 6" when the reader is looking at "Page 1" of the actual content — confusing.

How to Add Page Labels Online

Step 1: Upload Your PDF

Open MyPDF's Page Labels tool and upload your document.

Step 2: Define Numbering Sections

Create sections with different numbering:

  • Section 1 (Cover): Pages 1-1, no numbering

  • Section 2 (Preface): Pages 2-5, lowercase Roman (i, ii, iii, iv)

  • Section 3 (Content): Pages 6-50, Arabic (1, 2, 3...), starting at 1

  • Section 4 (Appendix): Pages 51+, prefix "A-", Arabic (A-1, A-2...)

Step 3: Apply and Download

Click "Apply Labels" and download. The PDF viewer will now show correct page labels for each section.

Numbering Styles

StyleExampleCommon Use
Arabic1, 2, 3, 4...Body content
Lowercase Romani, ii, iii, iv...Preface, foreword, TOC
Uppercase RomanI, II, III, IV...Major parts or volumes
Lowercase alphaa, b, c, d...Sub-sections
Uppercase alphaA, B, C, D...Appendices
Custom prefixA-1, B-1, Ch1-1...Multi-part documents

Tips

  1. Match printed numbers — page labels should match whatever page numbers are printed on the physical pages
  2. Start content at 1 — even if it's the 10th page of the file, label it "1" if it's the first content page
  3. Use Roman for front matter — this is the universal publishing convention
  4. Add labels after final edit — any page insertion/deletion requires relabeling

Frequently Asked Questions

Do page labels affect printing?

No — page labels only affect the PDF viewer's navigation. Printed page numbers come from Add Page Numbers or the document content itself.

Do all viewers support page labels?

Yes — page labels are a standard PDF feature. Adobe Reader, Chrome, Firefox Preview, and all modern viewers display them correctly.

Can I remove page labels?

Yes — upload the PDF and set all pages to use default sequential Arabic numbering (1, 2, 3...).
