MOBI to EPUB — Escaping Amazon's Walled Garden
Convert MOBI ebooks to EPUB for Kobo, Apple Books, and other e-readers. Amazon's proprietary format vs the open standard, and why EPUB won.
Why MOBI Exists (and Why You Want Out)
MOBI started life as the Mobipocket format in 2000, created by a French company for early PDAs and smartphones. Amazon acquired Mobipocket in 2005 and made MOBI the native format for every Kindle device.
For about fifteen years, that was the whole story. You wanted books on a Kindle? MOBI. You bought from the Kindle Store? MOBI (wrapped in Amazon's DRM as AZW). You sideloaded books via USB? MOBI.
Meanwhile, the rest of the ebook world standardized on EPUB — an open format maintained by the W3C. Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook, and virtually every other reading platform adopted EPUB. Amazon was the lone holdout.
Amazon Finally Blinked
In August 2022, Amazon announced it would stop accepting MOBI files sent via email to Kindle. The Send to Kindle service started accepting EPUB directly instead. This was a quiet admission that MOBI had become a dead end.
Here's where things stand now:
| Feature | MOBI | EPUB |
|---|---|---|
| Maintained by | Nobody (deprecated) | W3C (active standard) |
| Kindle support | Legacy only | Via Send to Kindle |
| Kobo support | No | Native |
| Apple Books | No | Native |
| Google Play Books | No | Native |
| HTML5/CSS3 | No | Yes (EPUB 3) |
| Embedded fonts | Limited | Full support |
| Audio/video | No | Yes |
How to Convert MOBI to EPUB
The DRM Question (Read This First)
If your MOBI files came from the Kindle Store, they almost certainly have Amazon's DRM. DRM-protected files cannot be converted. The conversion process will either fail outright or produce a corrupted file. This applies to any converter, online or desktop.
Only DRM-free MOBI files can be converted. These typically come from:
- Project Gutenberg — Public domain ebooks, always DRM-free
- Smashwords / Draft2Digital — Many indie authors sell DRM-free
- Humble Bundle — Ebook bundles are DRM-free
- Direct from publishers — Tor Books, for example, went DRM-free in 2012
- Personal documents — Files you created yourself
Online Conversion
MyPDF's MOBI to EPUB converter handles the conversion in seconds. Upload the MOBI file, download the EPUB. No software installation, no account needed. For a handful of files, this is the fastest path.
Desktop Ebook Managers
If you have hundreds of MOBI files to convert, a desktop ebook management application will let you batch-convert, edit metadata, manage covers, and organize your library simultaneously. These are also better for privacy-sensitive content since files stay on your machine.
What Survives the Conversion?
MOBI to EPUB conversion is generally clean because EPUB is the more capable format. But set realistic expectations:
- Text and chapters: Convert perfectly
- Basic formatting (bold, italic, headings): No issues
- Images: Preserved, though resolution stays the same
- Table of contents: Usually intact, occasionally needs cleanup
- Embedded fonts: MOBI rarely uses them, so this is a non-issue
- Complex tables: May need minor adjustment
- Cover image: Usually transfers, but verify it in your reader
After Converting: Where to Read Your EPUBs
Once you have EPUB files, your options open up dramatically:
- Kobo e-readers — Sideload via USB or use Kobo's cloud sync
- Apple Books — Drag and drop on Mac, or use iTunes sync
- Google Play Books — Upload to your library at play.google.com/books
- OPDS-compatible servers — Self-hosted ebook servers for reading anywhere
- Moon+ Reader / ReadEra — Android apps with excellent EPUB rendering
- Kindle — Send via email (Amazon converts on their end)
Frequently Asked Questions
I have AZW files, not MOBI. Is that the same thing?
AZW is Amazon's DRM wrapper around MOBI. If the file has DRM, it cannot be converted. If you have DRM-free AZW files (rare), they convert the same way as MOBI.Will I lose my highlights and bookmarks?
Yes. Kindle stores annotations in a separate system tied to your Amazon account. They don't live inside the MOBI file itself, so they won't transfer to the EPUB.Can I convert back to MOBI later?
You can, but there's no reason to. EPUB is strictly superior. Keep the original MOBI as a backup if you want, but use the EPUB going forward.Related Tools
