What Is Booklet Layout?

Booklet layout (also called imposition) rearranges PDF pages so that when printed double-sided and folded in half, the pages appear in the correct reading order. It's how physical booklets, pamphlets, and zines are made.

For a simple 8-page booklet on A4 paper:

  • Sheet 1 front: pages 8 and 1 (side by side)

  • Sheet 1 back: pages 2 and 7

  • Sheet 2 front: pages 6 and 3

  • Sheet 2 back: pages 4 and 5

Fold the sheets in half, nest them together, and staple the spine — you have a booklet.

Common Uses

  • Event programs — concerts, weddings, conferences
  • Church bulletins — weekly service programs
  • Zines and indie publications — DIY publishing
  • Instruction manuals — compact product guides
  • Children's books — small print-at-home story books
  • Marketing brochures — professional multi-page pamphlets

How to Create a Booklet Online

Step 1: Upload Your PDF

Open MyPDF's Booklet Layout tool and upload your document.

Step 2: Configure Settings

  • Paper size — A4 or Letter (each sheet holds 2 pages side by side)
  • Binding edge — left (default) or right (for RTL languages)
  • Page scaling — shrink pages to fit within the half-sheet area

Step 3: Download and Print

Download the rearranged PDF. Print it double-sided (flip on short edge), then fold and staple.

Page Count Requirements

Booklets work best with page counts that are multiples of 4:

PagesSheets NeededNotes
41Single folded sheet
82Most common small booklet
123Good for programs
164Standard zine size
205Approaches staple limit
24+6+May need perfect binding instead of saddle-stitch
If your page count isn't a multiple of 4, the tool adds blank pages to fill the gap.

Printing Tips

  1. Use duplex printing — set your printer to "flip on short edge" for correct booklet orientation
  2. Print a test copy first — verify page order before printing a batch
  3. Use heavier paper — 100-120 gsm works better for booklets than standard 80 gsm
  4. Staple at the fold — use a long-reach stapler or saddle stapler for the spine
  5. Trim edges — a paper cutter gives clean, professional edges after folding

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pages can a saddle-stitched booklet have?

Practically, up to 48-64 pages (12-16 sheets). Beyond that, the booklet becomes too thick to fold flat. For longer documents, consider perfect binding.

Can I create booklets from A4 pages?

Yes — two A5-sized pages print side by side on each A4 sheet. After folding, you get an A5 booklet.

What about page numbers?

Page numbers in your original PDF are preserved. They'll appear in the correct position on each booklet page.
  • N-up PDF — Print multiple pages per sheet (2-up, 4-up)
  • Add Page Numbers — Number pages before booklet layout
  • Resize Pages — Resize to match your target paper size
  • Merge PDF — Combine sections before creating booklet
