TIFF vs PNG — When Lossless Quality Meets Different Needs

Both Lossless, Very Different Purposes

TIFF and PNG are both lossless image formats — neither discards any pixel data. But they were designed for completely different worlds.

TIFF was built for the print and publishing industry. It supports CMYK color, multiple pages in a single file, layers, and metadata that print workflows need. PNG was built for the web. It supports transparency, compresses efficiently for web delivery, and renders perfectly in every browser.

Using TIFF for a website is like wearing a tuxedo to the beach. Using PNG for a commercial print job is like wearing flip-flops to a wedding. Both technically "work," but neither is appropriate.

When TIFF Wins

Commercial Printing

Print shops expect TIFF. It supports CMYK color space (the ink model printers use), high bit depth for smooth gradients, and maintains maximum quality through the RIP (Raster Image Processing) pipeline.

Medical Imaging

Hospitals and radiology departments use TIFF (often alongside DICOM) for storing X-rays, MRIs, and pathology slides. The format supports 16-bit grayscale, essential for diagnostic image quality where subtle shade differences matter.

Archival

Libraries, museums, and government archives store master scans as TIFF. The Library of Congress recommends uncompressed TIFF for digital preservation. It's a simple, well-documented format unlikely to become unreadable.

Multi-Page Documents

TIFF can store multiple pages in a single file — useful for fax transmissions, scanned documents, and batch scanning workflows.

When PNG Wins

Web Images

PNG is a first-class web citizen. Every browser renders it natively. TIFF is not supported by any web browser — you literally cannot display a TIFF on a webpage.

Transparency

PNG's alpha channel is the standard for transparent images on the web. Product photos with transparent backgrounds, logos, UI elements, icons — all PNG (or WebP, increasingly).

Screenshots

The PNG format's lossless compression handles the flat colors and sharp text of screenshots efficiently. TIFF would produce unnecessarily larger files for the same content.

Software and Application Use

App icons, game textures, software UI elements — PNG is universally supported by development tools, image editors, and operating systems.

PNG's Deflate compression is generally more efficient than TIFF's LZW for the types of images PNG is used for. Uncompressed TIFF is dramatically larger — only used when processing speed matters more than storage.

Converting Between Them

TIFF → PNG: Straightforward, lossless. You lose CMYK (converted to RGB), multi-page support, and some metadata. Good for taking print images to the web. → MyPDF's Convert Image PNG → TIFF: Lossless. You gain nothing except print-workflow compatibility. Don't convert PNG to TIFF expecting better quality — PNG is already lossless. The Decision Rule

Going to print? TIFF. Going to a screen? PNG (or WebP for web). Not sure? Keep the TIFF master, generate PNG (or WebP) derivatives as needed.
