Best Free File Converters in 2026 — Our Tested Rankings
We tested MyPDF, CloudConvert, Zamzar, Convertio, and FreeConvert with real files. Here's how they ranked on speed, quality, format support, and limits.
I spent a week uploading the same set of test files to every major free file converter. A 50-page Word document, a 4K video clip, a multi-tab Excel spreadsheet, a FLAC album, and a scanned PDF. Here's what actually happened.
The Rankings
| Rank | Tool | Free Tier Limits | Formats | Speed | Quality | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | MyPDF | Generous, no account | 50+ | Fast | Excellent | Best overall |
| 2 | CloudConvert | 25 conversions/day | 200+ | Fast | Excellent | Best format range |
| 3 | Convertio | 100 MB file limit | 300+ (claimed) | Medium | Good | Solid all-rounder |
| 4 | FreeConvert | 1 GB file limit | 60+ | Medium | Good | Good for large files |
| 5 | Zamzar | 25 MB file limit, 2/day | 100+ | Slow | Good | Too restrictive |
MyPDF — Best Overall Free Converter
MyPDF impressed me because it just works without getting in the way. No account creation. No "processing... sign up to download" bait-and-switch. Upload, convert, download. The Word-to-PDF conversion preserved all formatting, including the table of contents and embedded charts. The video converter handled 4K without complaining. Audio conversion maintained quality settings I specified.
Format support covers documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF), images (PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG, HEIC), audio (MP3, FLAC, WAV, AAC, OGG), video (MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI), and ebooks (EPUB, MOBI).
Where it could improve: the interface is utilitarian. CloudConvert looks more polished. But I'll take functional over pretty.
CloudConvert — Best Format Range
CloudConvert supports over 200 formats, which is genuinely impressive. Obscure CAD files, old-school document formats, niche image types — if a format exists, CloudConvert probably handles it.
The free tier gives you 25 conversions per day, which is enough for most people. Quality is consistently excellent. The API is well-documented for developers who want to integrate conversions into their workflows.
Downsides: the 25-conversion daily limit resets strictly. If you need batch processing of 100 files, you'll need their paid plan or multiple days.
Convertio — Solid but Limited Free Tier
Convertio claims 300+ formats, though I suspect some of those are variations (JPEG and JPG counted separately, etc.). In practice, it handled everything I threw at it.
The 100 MB file size limit on the free tier is the main constraint. My 4K video clip was 400 MB and couldn't be processed without upgrading. For documents and images, it works fine.
The interface is clean, and conversion quality was good across the board.
FreeConvert — Good for Large Files
FreeConvert's 1 GB free tier limit is the most generous for file size. If you have large video files or massive PDFs, this is worth trying.
Speed was slower than MyPDF and CloudConvert for document conversions. Video conversion times were comparable. Quality was solid — no complaints about output fidelity.
The site has more ads than the others, which is the trade-off for the generous free tier.
Zamzar — The Nostalgia Pick
Zamzar has been around since 2006, which makes it ancient in internet years. The service still works, and it supports many formats.
But the free tier is severely limited: 25 MB max file size and only two free conversions per day. In 2026, with competitors offering far more, these restrictions feel outdated. Zamzar's paid plans are also more expensive than the competition.
What We Tested
To keep the comparison fair, every tool received the same files:
- Word document — 50 pages with tables, images, headers, and a table of contents
- Excel spreadsheet — 5 tabs, pivot tables, charts, conditional formatting
- 4K video — 2-minute clip, H.264, 400 MB
- FLAC album — 12 tracks, converting to MP3 320 kbps
- Scanned PDF — 10-page document needing OCR
The Verdict
For most people, MyPDF is the best starting point — no barriers, good quality, broad format support. If you hit a format it doesn't support, CloudConvert is the fallback with the widest format range.
