Tejas Express — India's First Private-Operator-Run Premium Train
Guide to Tejas Express covering IRCTC-operated routes, fares, onboard amenities, free insurance, entertainment system, and how it differs from Vande Bharat.
Tejas Express made history as the first Indian train operated by IRCTC rather than Indian Railways directly. When the Lucknow–New Delhi Tejas launched in October 2019, it introduced something unheard of on Indian trains — a delay compensation guarantee. If the train arrived more than an hour late, passengers got ₹100 back. Two hours late? ₹250.
That small detail told you everything about what Tejas was trying to be: a train run with airline-like accountability.
What Is Tejas Express?
Tejas Express uses Shatabdi-type chair car coaches but with upgraded interiors, individual entertainment screens (on select rakes), improved catering, and IRCTC-managed service instead of Indian Railways catering contractors. The trains are AC-only, chair car seating, designed for intercity day travel.
The crucial difference from other premium trains: IRCTC acts as the operator. They set the ticket prices, manage onboard services, and take responsibility for delays. Indian Railways provides the track, crew, and locomotive, but the service wrapper is IRCTC's.
Routes and Schedules
| Route | Train No. | Distance | Time | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lucknow Jn–New Delhi | 82501/82502 | 512 km | ~6.5 hrs | Daily (6 days/week) |
| Mumbai CSMT–Ahmedabad | 82901/82902 | 493 km | ~6.5 hrs | Daily (6 days/week) |
| Madgaon (Goa)–Mumbai CSMT | — | 581 km | ~8.5 hrs | Selected days |
Fare Structure
Tejas fares are dynamic — IRCTC adjusts prices based on demand, similar to airline pricing. Booking early gets you the base fare; last-minute bookings cost more.
| Class | Base Fare Range | Peak Fare Range |
|---|---|---|
| Executive Chair Car | ₹1,500–2,000 | ₹2,200–2,800 |
| AC Chair Car | ₹900–1,200 | ₹1,400–1,800 |
The Free Travel Insurance
Every Tejas ticket comes with complimentary travel insurance of ₹25 lakh. This covers accidental death or injury during the train journey. No other Indian train offers this automatically — you'd normally have to opt in for ₹0.92 on IRCTC's booking page.
Onboard Amenities
Here's what you get on a Tejas:
- Infotainment screens: Individual screens on seat-backs (on original rakes) with movies, shows, music, and journey info. The content library isn't Netflix-level, but it passes the time on a 6-hour ride.
- WiFi: Available on the train, though speeds vary. Enough for messaging and light browsing, not for video calls.
- Meals: IRCTC-managed catering with a higher quality benchmark than regular Shatabdi meals. Expect a welcome drink, breakfast/lunch tray, and tea service.
- Charging: Every seat has a power socket and USB port.
- Cleanliness: IRCTC takes this seriously on Tejas. Housekeeping staff do rounds every 2–3 hours during the journey.
- Automatic doors: Sensor-operated sliding doors between coaches (like Vande Bharat).

The Delay Compensation Policy
Tejas is the only Indian train that compensates passengers for delays:
- 1 hour+ late: ₹100 per passenger
- 2 hours+ late: ₹250 per passenger
Booking Tejas
Tejas tickets are booked exclusively through IRCTC (website or app). The process is the same as any other train, with one difference: Tatkal is not available on Tejas in the traditional sense. Instead, the dynamic pricing model means last-minute tickets cost more.
Booking opens 120 days in advance. For the best fares, book at least 30–45 days ahead.

Practical Travel Tips
- The Lucknow Tejas departs early: 6:10 AM from Lucknow. Factor in auto/cab time to the station. Missing this train means a ₹1,000+ fare gone.
- Return booking: The return Tejas from New Delhi departs at 3:35 PM. If your meeting/work runs late, you're stuck — there's no flexibility to shift to a later Tejas.
- Food preferences: Mark your veg/non-veg preference at booking. Unlike Rajdhani where they ask on board, Tejas meals are pre-loaded based on booking data.
- Luggage: Same overhead rack setup as Shatabdi. Two bags per person is comfortable; three gets tight.
- Cancellation: IRCTC charges cancellation fees that increase closer to departure. Cancel more than 48 hours before for the best refund.
Is Tejas Worth the Premium?
Compared to Shatabdi, Tejas costs 20–40% more. The extra money gets you better food, entertainment screens, guaranteed insurance, and delay compensation. For business travelers who value predictability, that premium is justified. For leisure travelers watching their budget, the Shatabdi or Vande Bharat on the same route (if available) offers 90% of the experience at a lower price.
The real value of Tejas is what it represents: a proof-of-concept that IRCTC (or any operator) can run trains with service standards closer to airlines than traditional railways. Whether this model expands to more routes depends on profitability — and so far, the Lucknow and Ahmedabad services have reportedly been profitable.
