The New Delhi–Kalka Shatabdi Express (12005/12006) is the gateway train to Shimla. It brings you to Kalka — the foothill station where the famous Kalka-Shimla toy train begins — in about 4 hours from the capital. For anyone planning a Shimla trip by rail, this Shatabdi is the first leg of the journey.

Schedule

DirectionTrain No.DepartsArrivesDuration
New Delhi → Kalka120057:40 AM11:50 AM~4 hrs 10 min
Kalka → New Delhi120065:30 PM9:35 PM~4 hrs 5 min
The schedule is designed for a connect-and-continue pattern: arrive at Kalka before noon, catch the afternoon toy train to Shimla. On the return, the toy train arrives at Kalka by 4–5 PM, giving you enough time to board the return Shatabdi.

Route and Stops

The train runs through Haryana into the Shivalik foothills:

  1. New Delhi
  2. Ambala Cantt
  3. Chandigarh
  4. Kalka
Only 3 intermediate stops across 266 km. The route passes through the Punjab plains and then starts climbing gently as you approach the Shivaliks. The last 30 minutes to Kalka are visually pleasing — green hills appearing on the horizon after hours of flat farmland.

Onboard Experience

This is one of the shorter Shatabdi routes, so the experience is compact:

Boarding: New Delhi station, usually platform 1–4. Arrive 20 minutes early to find your coach. Breakfast: Served within 30 minutes of departure — tea/coffee, bread-butter-jam, a cooked item (poha or upma), and a juice box. Mid-journey snack: Around the 2-hour mark, samosa or cake with tea. Seats: Standard Shatabdi seating — CC (3×2) and EC (2×2). Comfortable for a 4-hour ride. Charging points at every seat. View: The right side of the train offers distant views of the Shivaliks in the last hour. Not dramatic, but pleasant.

The Shimla Connection

The whole point of this Shatabdi for most travelers: reaching Shimla. Here's how the connection works:

  1. Arrive Kalka: 11:50 AM by Shatabdi
  2. Walk to the narrow-gauge station: It's adjacent to the main station — 2-minute walk
  3. Board the toy train: The Himalayan Queen or Shivalik Deluxe departs around 12:10–12:30 PM
  4. Arrive Shimla: ~5:30 PM by Himalayan Queen, ~4:30 PM by rail motor car
Total journey time (Delhi to Shimla): About 10 hours with the connection, compared to 8–9 hours by road. The rail route takes longer but is infinitely more scenic and comfortable. Booking tip: Book both the Shatabdi and the toy train together on IRCTC. The toy train sells out during peak season — Shatabdi availability doesn't guarantee toy train seats.

Food Quality

Kalka Shatabdi food is average by Shatabdi standards. The breakfast is functional — not bad, not memorable. The samosa served mid-journey is the highlight for most passengers (it's fresh and well-spiced).

For a 4-hour journey, the food is more than adequate. If you're fussy, grab additional snacks at New Delhi station before boarding — the Rajdhani Lounge or platform stalls have good options.

Chandigarh Stop — An Alternative Destination

Many passengers on this Shatabdi aren't going to Kalka or Shimla — they're getting off at Chandigarh. The Chandigarh stop at ~3 hours from Delhi makes this an excellent day-trip train for Chandigarh visits.

Delhi to Chandigarh round-trip on this Shatabdi:

  • Depart 7:40 AM → Arrive Chandigarh ~10:40 AM

  • Return Shatabdi 12006 departs Chandigarh ~6:30 PM → Arrive Delhi ~9:35 PM

  • Gives you ~8 hours in Chandigarh — enough for Sector 17, Rock Garden, and Sukhna Lake

Booking Tips

  1. Weekend bookings: Friday evening and Sunday evening trains (Kalka → Delhi direction) fill up fast with weekend tourists returning from Shimla.
  2. Advance booking: 30 days ahead is usually sufficient for weekdays. 60+ days for holiday weekends.
  3. Chandigarh travelers: If the Shatabdi is full, check the Chandigarh Shatabdi or Jan Shatabdi as alternatives.
  4. Check at indianrail.app: Compare Shatabdi and Vande Bharat options on this route.

Alternatives

  • Kalka Mail (12311/12312): Overnight train from Howrah to Kalka via Delhi. Useful if you want to sleep and wake up at Kalka.
  • Chandigarh–New Delhi Shatabdi: If your destination is Chandigarh, not Kalka.
  • Road (bus/car): Delhi–Shimla by road takes 8–9 hours directly. The train route (Delhi–Kalka + toy train) takes longer but splits the journey into two comfortable segments.
The Kalka Shatabdi plus the toy train to Shimla is one of India's great rail journeys. The Shatabdi leg is practical — comfortable, fast, and efficient. The toy train leg is magical — narrow gauge tracks winding through tunnels and over bridges with Himalayan views. Together, they make driving to Shimla feel mundane.
