Mahamana Express was Indian Railways' attempt to showcase what a modern mail/express train could look like. Named after Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (honorific: Mahamana), the first service launched in 2016 between Varanasi and New Delhi. What set it apart wasn't speed or route — it was the coaches themselves.

The Mahamana Upgrade

Mahamana runs with specially refurbished LHB coaches that include features not found on regular trains at the time of launch:

  • LED destination boards on coach exteriors
  • Bio-vacuum toilets (like aircraft toilets)
  • Vending machines for snacks and beverages
  • Improved interiors with better color schemes and materials
  • Fire and smoke detection systems
  • GPS-based information displays
  • Mobile charging at every berth
  • Braille signage for visually impaired passengers
These features are now becoming standard on newer Indian Railway coaches, but Mahamana was the trailblazer.

Mahamana offers a standard long-distance configuration:

This makes Mahamana accessible to all budget levels — from Sleeper class at ₹400–500 to 2A at ₹1,500–1,800 for the Delhi–Varanasi route.

The ride quality difference between Mahamana's LHB coaches and older ICF coaches on parallel services is immediately noticeable. Less clatter, less vibration, smoother braking.

Food

Meals are not included in the fare. You can buy from:

  • The pantry car (thali meals, snacks, tea)
  • Station vendors at major halts (Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad)
  • IRCTC e-catering for delivery to your seat at stations
The Varanasi end of the route has some excellent station food at Varanasi Junction — try the kachori-sabzi from the platform stalls if you have a long enough halt.

Booking Tips

  1. Sleeper class fills fast: The Delhi–Varanasi corridor is among the busiest in India. Book 60+ days in advance for Sleeper, 30+ for 3AC.
  1. Use GNWL: Book from New Delhi (originating station) for General Waitlist, which clears faster than RLWL for intermediate stations.
  1. Check alternatives: On the Delhi–Varanasi route, you also have Vande Bharat (chair car, daytime), Shiv Ganga Express, and Kashi Vishwanath Express. Compare timings and availability at indianrail.app.
  1. Tri-weekly schedule: Mahamana doesn't run daily. Verify the running days before booking.

Practical Experience

The Mahamana coaches genuinely feel like a step above standard Indian Railways stock. The interiors have a lighter color palette — think cream walls and pastel-toned berths instead of the dark browns and blues of traditional coaches. The bio-toilets are cleaner by design (vacuum flush means less water usage and less mess), though they do occasionally go out of service on longer routes.

The vending machines were a novelty at launch but have had mixed reliability. Some trains have them working, others have machines that are perpetually "out of stock." Don't depend on them for refreshments.

For overnight travel between Delhi and Varanasi, Mahamana offers a good middle ground — better than a regular Superfast, cheaper than Rajdhani, and with modern amenities that make the journey comfortable.

Who Should Choose Mahamana?

  • Travelers on the Delhi–Varanasi route who want newer coaches without paying Rajdhani prices
  • Anyone who values bio-toilets (especially relevant for women travelers)
  • Passengers who want the multi-class option (Sleeper through 2A)
  • People traveling on days when Rajdhani or Vande Bharat isn't running
