Jan Shatabdi Express — Affordable Day Train Guide
Guide to Jan Shatabdi Express — India's budget day train with AC and non-AC classes, how it compares to Shatabdi, routes, fares, and practical travel tips.
Jan Shatabdi is the people's version of Shatabdi Express. Same concept — intercity day travel on a fixed morning-out, evening-return schedule — but with mixed classes (AC and non-AC) and substantially lower fares. If Shatabdi is business class, Jan Shatabdi is economy.

Classes Explained
AC Chair Car (CC): Same 3×2 seating as Shatabdi, with air conditioning, cushioned seats, and charging points. The main difference is that Jan Shatabdi CC coaches may be older (ICF on some routes) and the catering is minimal. Second Sitting (2S): Non-AC chair car with padded bench seats, fans, and open windows. Functional for short trips (2–4 hours) but uncomfortable for longer journeys in summer. Great for budget travel in cooler months. Some Jan Shatabdi trains also carry Sleeper class coaches on overnight extensions, but this is rare.

Food and Catering
Unlike Shatabdi, meals are generally NOT included in the Jan Shatabdi fare. Some services provide a small snack (biscuit packet + water bottle), but don't count on a full meal.
What to do:
- Carry your own food (the best option)
- Buy from station vendors at intermediate stops
- Use IRCTC e-catering to order food delivered to your seat at stations
The money you save on fares more than covers buying your own lunch.
The 2S Experience
Second Sitting is the hidden gem of Jan Shatabdi. The seats are basic but perfectly fine for trips under 4 hours. Open windows bring in fresh air (great during winter and monsoon). No AC means no artificial cold that Shatabdi passengers constantly complain about.
The downside: 2S can get crowded, especially between stations where unreserved passengers board. If you're traveling from the originating station, you'll get your reserved seat. From intermediate stations, you might have people standing in the aisle.
Winter travel tip: 2S on a Jan Shatabdi through the countryside on a crisp December morning is one of the most pleasant train experiences in India. Fresh air, warm sunlight through the window, and the passing landscape — genuinely enjoyable.Booking Tips
- CC fills up faster than 2S: Everyone wants AC, so book CC 30+ days ahead. 2S is usually available closer to departure.
- Check timings: Jan Shatabdi schedules are designed for day trips. If the timing works for a day trip, you save on hotels.
- Compare with Shatabdi: On routes with both, compare the CC fares. If Jan Shatabdi CC is ₹400 and Shatabdi CC is ₹800, Jan Shatabdi is the obvious budget choice. If the gap is smaller, Shatabdi's included meals narrow the value difference.
- Search on indianrail.app: Filter by train type to find Jan Shatabdi services on your route.
