Howrah Rajdhani Express 12301/12302 — Full Review
Detailed review of Howrah Rajdhani Express — the original Rajdhani train, covering route, food, punctuality, coach quality, and tips for Delhi-Kolkata travel.
Howrah Rajdhani Express (12301/12302) is where it all began. This was the first Rajdhani — launched on 3 March 1969 — and it set the template for premium long-distance rail travel in India. Over five decades later, it remains one of the busiest and most iconic trains on the network, connecting New Delhi to Howrah (Kolkata) daily.

The Original Rajdhani Legacy
There's a certain pride attached to the Howrah Rajdhani. Ask any regular passenger and they'll tell you it's not just a train — it's an institution. The Bengali business community, politicians, bureaucrats, and students have been riding this train for generations. The atmosphere on board has a distinctly Kolkata flavor — animated conversations, strong opinions on food quality, and high expectations of service.
Food — Bengali Standards Apply
Howrah Rajdhani food is held to a higher standard because the passenger base is particular about food quality. Here's what to expect:
Dinner: Soup, followed by a main course tray — paneer/fish/chicken curry, dal, rice (Kolkata passengers demand proper rice), roti, pickle, salad, and a sweet (often sandesh or mishti doi on the Howrah-bound service, standard gulab jamun on the Delhi-bound). Morning tea: 5:30 AM knock. Chai and biscuits. Breakfast: Bread-butter-jam, a cooked item (luchi with aloo on lucky days, poha or upma otherwise), and tea.The fish curry option on the Howrah-bound service is genuinely good — one of the few non-veg train meals I'd actively recommend. The vegetarian options are solid but unremarkable.
Coach Quality
The Howrah Rajdhani typically runs with well-maintained LHB coaches. Indian Railways assigns priority maintenance to this rake because of its historical importance and high-profile passenger base. Berths are in good condition, AC works reliably, and the coaches are cleaned during the journey.
Punctuality
The Howrah Rajdhani's punctuality has been a mixed bag:
- Delhi → Howrah (12301): Generally arrives on time or within 15 minutes. Delays beyond 30 minutes are uncommon except during fog season.
- Howrah → Delhi (12302): More prone to delays because it departs from Howrah in the afternoon and traverses Eastern Railway's busy Dhanbad-Gaya section during peak hours. Delays of 30–60 minutes happen occasionally.
- Fog season (December–January): Both directions can be delayed 2–6 hours when dense fog blankets North India. The Delhi approach is the worst affected section.
The Mughal Sarai Factor
The stop at Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (formerly Mughal Sarai) deserves mention. This junction is one of Indian Railways' busiest — a convergence point for traffic from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. Delays often originate here due to crossing conflicts. If your Rajdhani is running late, Mughal Sarai is usually where the delay accumulated.
Booking
Howrah Rajdhani 3AC is notoriously hard to book. The Delhi-Kolkata corridor has massive demand — students, businesspeople, government employees, and families all competing for berths. Key strategies:
- Book on the opening day (120 days before): Set a calendar reminder. Login to IRCTC at 8 AM sharp.
- Try 2AC if 3AC is waitlisted: The fare difference of ₹700–800 is worth a confirmed berth.
- Check the Sealdah Rajdhani (12313/12314): It runs on the same corridor via a slightly different route. If Howrah Rajdhani is full, Sealdah Rajdhani might have availability.
- Duronto alternative: The Howrah-Delhi Duronto (non-stop) runs 2–3 times per week and is often easier to book.
- Tatkal at 10 AM: Competitive but possible. Have your payment ready.
Travel Tips
- Platform at New Delhi: Howrah Rajdhani usually departs from platforms 6–9. Check the indicator board or the station app.
- Kanpur halt: If you're getting off at Kanpur, the halt is brief (2 minutes). Be ready at the door.
- Security: The Delhi-Howrah route has historically had issues with drugging-and-robbery. Don't accept food or drinks from strangers. Keep your valuable items (phone, wallet) close while sleeping.
- Water: Carry at least 1 liter. The train provides water, but the bottles are small.
- Howrah station: Howrah is massive and can be overwhelming for first-timers. Exit from platform 1 toward the main entrance for taxis and auto-rickshaws. The Howrah Bridge is right outside — worth a look even if you're not going that way.
First AC on Howrah Rajdhani
If you can afford it, First AC on the Howrah Rajdhani is special. The coupes are private, the service is attentive, and the food includes an extra course (starter). The 2-berth coupes give you a genuine private room on wheels. For couples or solo business travelers, it's an experience worth trying at least once.
The Howrah Rajdhani isn't perfect — the occasional delay, the aging infrastructure on some sections, the persistent challenge of booking during peak season. But it's a living legend of Indian railways, and riding it connects you to over 50 years of India's rail history.
