Golden Chariot is South India's answer to the Palace on Wheels. Named after the iconic stone chariot at Hampi, this luxury tourist train takes you through Karnataka's temples, palaces, and wildlife sanctuaries — with a side trip to Goa — in a week of curated travel.

While not as internationally famous as Palace on Wheels or Maharajas' Express, the Golden Chariot offers something neither of those can: South India's distinct cultural landscape, from the ruins of Vijayanagara to the beaches of Goa.

Itinerary

The Golden Chariot runs two circuits:

Pride of Karnataka (7 nights)

Cabins

Golden Chariot cabins are named after Karnataka's dynasties — Kadamba, Chalukya, Hoysala, etc.

FeatureDetails
Cabin count44 cabins across 11 coaches
Size~120 sq ft
ConfigurationTwin or double bed
BathroomAttached with shower
AmenitiesAC, LCD TV, safe, writing desk
DecorKarnataka royal themes, Hoysala-inspired carvings
The cabins are well-appointed and comfortable. Not as large as Maharajas' Express suites, but comparable to Palace on Wheels. The design references South Indian temple architecture, which gives it a distinct identity.

Food

Two restaurant cars serve meals:

  • South Indian breakfast: Idli, dosa, vada, filter coffee. This is where Golden Chariot has an edge — the South Indian breakfast is authentic and excellent.
  • Lunch: Often at a heritage hotel near the day's attraction. Multi-course, both South and North Indian.
  • Dinner: On-train dining with rotating menus. Karnataka specialties like Bisi Bele Bath, Ragi Mudde, and Maddur Vada feature alongside continental options.
  • Bar: On-board bar car with spirits, wine, and cocktails.
The food is the Golden Chariot's quiet strength. South Indian cuisine on a luxury train — filter coffee at dawn, crisp dosas for breakfast, Coorgi cuisine for dinner — is a combination you won't find on any Rajasthan-based luxury train.

Pricing

CategoryRate (approx.)
Indian citizens (per person, twin sharing)₹2,50,000–4,00,000
Foreign nationals$500–700 per night
Includes: Accommodation, all meals, guided tours, entry fees, transfers, cultural programs. Excludes: Travel to/from Bangalore, travel insurance, personal expenses.

Pricing is lower than Maharajas' Express and comparable to Palace on Wheels, making it the mid-range luxury train option.

The Hampi Experience

The Golden Chariot's Hampi stop is arguably the highlight of the entire trip. The train parks at Hospet station, and you're transferred to the Hampi ruins — a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning 26 km² of boulder-strewn landscape with temples, bazaars, and the iconic stone chariot.

Seeing Hampi with a knowledgeable guide (included in the package) transforms the experience. The scale of the Vijayanagara Empire becomes real when you walk through the ruins with someone explaining what each structure was and how the city functioned.

Choose Golden Chariot if: You want South Indian culture, temple architecture, and a Goa beach day. Better for repeat India visitors who've already done Rajasthan. Choose Palace on Wheels if: You want the classic Rajasthan experience — desert forts, Taj Mahal, camel safaris. Better for first-time luxury train travelers.

Practical Tips

  1. Bangalore boarding: The train boards at Bangalore's Yeshwantpur station, not the main station. Confirm the pickup point.
  2. Pack light: Cabin storage is adequate but not spacious. One suitcase and a day bag per person.
  3. Comfortable footwear: Hampi and Badami involve significant walking on uneven ground.
  4. Camera: A good camera is essential for Hampi and the Hoysala temples. The stone carvings at Halebidu are extraordinarily detailed.
  5. Season: October–March is the operating season. November–February is ideal weather.
