Gatimaan Express holds the record for India's fastest conventional train, hitting 160 km/h on the Delhi–Agra section. Launched on 5 April 2016, it covers the 188 km between Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) and Agra Cantt in about 100 minutes — making it the go-to train for a Taj Mahal day trip from Delhi.

The train doesn't run on Fridays because the Taj Mahal is closed that day — smart scheduling by Railways. Some periods also see maintenance blocks, so check the latest schedule on indianrail.app.

Beyond Agra, Gatimaan continues to Jhansi (extending the route to about 400 km), stopping at Gwalior. The Agra–Jhansi section is slower, but still faster than regular trains.

Why 160 km/h Matters

On the Delhi–Agra corridor, Gatimaan was the first train cleared for 160 km/h. The track between Delhi and Agra was upgraded with:

  • Continuous welded rails (no joints = smoother ride)
  • Concrete sleepers throughout
  • Advanced signaling (no manual signals on this section)
  • Fenced sections to prevent cattle and trespassing
The train reaches its top speed on the straight stretches between Mathura and Palwal. You'll feel the speed difference compared to a regular train — the landscape blurs in a way you don't normally experience on Indian tracks.

Classes and Fares

ClassSeatsFare (NZM–AGC)Meal Included
Executive Chair Car (EC)2×2, wider seats~₹1,500Yes
AC Chair Car (CC)3×2, standard~₹750Yes
Fares are comparable to Shatabdi pricing. For a day trip to see the Taj, most solo travelers go with CC — it's comfortable enough for a 100-minute ride, and you save ₹750 that's better spent on a good guide at the Taj.

Food on Board

Meals are included in the ticket price. For the morning departure, expect:

  • Welcome drink (juice box or flavored water)
  • Breakfast tray: bread-butter-jam, a cooked item (omelette or poha), tea/coffee
  • Light snack: samosa or cake with tea
The food is decent — not spectacular, but you're only on the train for 100 minutes. Most of that time is spent looking out the window or settling in. By the time breakfast is served and cleared, you're almost at Agra.

Planning the Perfect Delhi–Agra Day Trip

Gatimaan makes the Taj Mahal day trip effortless. Here's a tested itinerary:

7:30 AM — Reach Hazrat Nizamuddin station. The station is well-connected by metro (Nizamuddin station on Magenta Line). 8:10 AM — Gatimaan departs. Have breakfast on the train. 9:50 AM — Arrive Agra Cantt. Pre-book an auto/cab from the station (₹200–300 to Taj Mahal, 5 km). Prepaid auto booths are inside the station. 10:15 AM – 1:00 PM — Visit the Taj Mahal. Entry from the West Gate is usually less crowded. Morning light is best for photos. 1:30 PM — Lunch at a restaurant in the Taj Ganj area. Joney's Place and Shankara Vegis are popular with travelers. 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM — Visit Agra Fort (₹50 for Indians, ₹650 for foreigners). It's 2.5 km from the Taj. 5:00 PM — Head to Agra Cantt station. 5:50 PM — Board the return Gatimaan. 7:30 PM — Back in Delhi. Done.

This itinerary works even in summer, though you'll want to start the Taj visit earlier (the heat after 11 AM is brutal from April to June).

Booking Tips

  1. Book 30+ days ahead: Gatimaan fills up on weekends and around holidays. Tourist season (October–March) sees near-full trains.
  1. Hazrat Nizamuddin, not New Delhi: Make sure you go to H. Nizamuddin station, not New Delhi Railway Station. They're different stations, 7 km apart. This trips up first-timers.
  1. Foreign tourists: Gatimaan is popular with international tourists doing Delhi-based Taj trips. There's a Foreign Tourist Quota on IRCTC — use your passport number while booking.
  1. Return ticket: Book both legs simultaneously. If the return Gatimaan is full, alternatives include Shatabdi (departs around 6 PM from Agra) or Vande Bharat.

Gatimaan vs Vande Bharat (Delhi–Agra)

The Vande Bharat on the Delhi–Jaipur route passes through Agra on some services. Comparing:

Coach qualityOlder LHB, goodNewer, slightly better
Both are excellent options. Gatimaan's schedule is specifically designed for Agra day trips, making it the more practical choice.

Onboard Experience

The coaches are standard LHB with Shatabdi-level interiors. Seats are comfortable with decent legroom, individual reading lights, and power sockets. The ride quality on the Delhi-Agra track is genuinely smooth — you can keep a cup of chai on the tray table without worrying about spills, even at 160 km/h.

The coaches are maintained well, and housekeeping does a round during the journey. Bio-toilets are standard.

One nice touch: the windows on Gatimaan coaches are larger than standard coaches, giving you better views of the Yamuna floodplains as the train crosses the river near Agra.

Beyond Agra — The Jhansi Extension

If you're headed to Jhansi (for Orchha or Khajuraho), Gatimaan continues past Agra with stops at Gwalior and Jhansi. The full NZM–Jhansi journey takes about 4.5 hours, which is faster than most other trains on this route. Gwalior is about 3 hours from Delhi on this train — another viable day-trip option for history buffs (Gwalior Fort is worth the visit).
