Deccan Queen has been running between Mumbai and Pune since 1 June 1930 — making it India's oldest running superfast train and one of the most beloved. Ninety-five years of daily service without a break (except during extreme events). No other Indian train has that record. Mumbaikars and Punekars treat it not as a train but as a cultural institution.

The History

Deccan Queen was introduced to cater to the business and social traffic between Bombay (now Mumbai) and Poona (now Pune) — the two cities that have always been intertwined. Originally pulled by steam locomotives, it was one of the first trains in India to offer a dining car. It was electrified in 1929 (even before it launched under the Deccan Queen name), making it among the earliest electric-hauled trains in Asia.

The name "Deccan Queen" was chosen because the train served the Deccan Plateau region, and "Queen" reflected the regal service standard.

Mumbai CSMT → Pune Jn121237:15 AM10:25 AM~3 hrs 10 min
Pune Jn → Mumbai CSMT121243:15 PM6:25 PM~3 hrs 10 min
The timing is built for day-trippers and daily commuters: morning service from Mumbai, afternoon return from Pune. Some passengers have been commuting on this train for decades.

Route and the Ghat Section

The 192 km route passes through one of the most scenic rail corridors in India:

  1. Mumbai CSMT
  2. Dadar
  3. Thane
  4. Karjat
  5. Lonavala
  6. Pune Junction
The star of the journey is the Bhor Ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala. Here, the track climbs 550 meters through the Western Ghats, passing through tunnels, over viaducts, and along cliff edges with stunning valley views. During monsoon (July–September), waterfalls cascade down the hillsides directly next to the track. It's genuinely breathtaking. Sit on the left side (Mumbai to Pune direction) for the best ghat views. The valley opens up on the left with steep drops that are simultaneously terrifying and beautiful.

Classes

ClassLayoutFareNotes
AC Chair Car (CC)3×2~₹3502–3 coaches
Second Sitting (2S)3×3~₹1208–10 coaches
No Executive Class on this train. Most regular commuters travel in 2S; tourists and business travelers prefer CC. The 2S coaches are perfectly adequate for a 3-hour journey — you don't need AC to enjoy the ghats.

Food — The Dining Car Tradition

Deccan Queen is one of the very few Indian trains that still has a proper dining car where you can walk in, sit at a table, and eat a meal — not just a pantry car that delivers food to your seat.

The dining car serves:

  • Veg and non-veg thali: ₹80–120

  • Snacks: Samosas, vada pav, cutlets

  • Beverages: Tea, coffee, cold drinks

The thali isn't gourmet, but eating in a proper dining car while the Western Ghats roll by outside the window is an experience you can't get on any other Indian train.

The Commuter Culture

Deccan Queen has a unique social ecosystem. Regular commuters — many of whom have been taking this train for years — form groups, share food, play cards, and hold animated discussions every single day. There are stories of friendships, business deals, and even marriages that originated on the Deccan Queen.

If you ride this train regularly, you'll start recognizing faces. The same vendors patrol the aisles with the same products. The same TTE checks tickets at the same spot. There's a rhythm to it that's comforting.

Monsoon Special

The Bhor Ghat section during monsoon (July–September) is the Deccan Queen at its most spectacular:

  • Waterfalls appear along the track — some close enough to mist the windows

  • The hills turn lush green

  • Clouds drift through the valleys below the track

  • The temperature drops noticeably as the train climbs

If you're visiting Mumbai/Pune during monsoon and want a scenic rail experience, the Deccan Queen through the ghats is a must.

Practical Tips

  1. Book the AC Chair Car for comfort: The ₹200 premium over 2S is worth it for the cushioned seats and climate control, especially in summer.
  1. Arrive early at Mumbai CSMT: The train departs at 7:15 AM from one of the busiest stations in India. Get there by 6:45 AM.
  1. Ghat section timing: The train enters the ghat section about 1.5 hours after Mumbai departure. Have your camera ready.
  1. Return booking: Book both legs together. The afternoon Pune–Mumbai service fills up with business travelers.
  1. Lonavala day trip: You can get off at Lonavala (about 2 hours from Mumbai) for a quick hill-station visit and catch a later train back. Lonavala has chikki shops, Bhushi Dam, and Lohagad Fort nearby.

Deccan Queen vs Indrayani Express

The Indrayani Express is another popular Mumbai–Pune train:

Deccan Queen is slightly faster and has the dining car. Indrayani is an earlier departure. Both cover the same scenic route.

Heritage Status

Indian Railways has periodically considered giving Deccan Queen heritage train status, which would protect it from cancellation or modification. Whether or not that happens formally, it's already a heritage train in the hearts of millions of Mumbai-Pune travelers.

Ninety-five years and counting. Check the schedule at indianrail.app.
