IRCTC Offers and Discounts — SBI Card, UPI Cashback, and More
How to find and use IRCTC booking offers — SBI card discounts, UPI cashback, wallet offers, and seasonal promotions on train tickets.
IRCTC regularly runs offers and partner promotions that can save you money on train bookings. Most travelers don't notice them because they're in a hurry to book and skip past the payment options. Here's where the savings hide.
SBI Card Offers
SBI has a long-standing partnership with IRCTC, and their co-branded credit card offers some of the best consistent discounts.
IRCTC SBI Platinum Credit Card
This card is specifically designed for frequent rail travelers:- Transaction discount: Up to 10% value back on IRCTC bookings (as reward points redeemable against future bookings)
- No convenience fee: IRCTC charges a convenience fee on online bookings (₹15-30 per transaction). SBI Platinum cardholders get this waived on a certain number of transactions per month.
- Fuel surcharge waiver: Useful if you drive to the station
- Annual fee: ₹500 (often waived on spending a threshold amount)
Regular SBI Cards
Even without the co-branded card, SBI debit and credit cards occasionally offer:- ₹50-100 cashback on bookings above a certain amount
- Festival-season promotions
- EMI options for expensive bookings (1A, group bookings)
UPI Cashback Offers
UPI is the most popular payment method on IRCTC, and UPI apps frequently run cashback offers for railway bookings.
Google Pay
- Periodic cashback offers (₹30-75 on IRCTC transactions)
- Scratch cards after successful payments
- Check the "Offers" section in Google Pay before paying
PhonePe
- Similar periodic cashback offers
- PhonePe sometimes runs railway-specific campaigns during festive seasons
- Check "My Offers" or "Cashback Offers" before paying
Paytm
- Railway booking offers are a staple on Paytm
- Paytm has its own train booking section (powered by IRCTC) with additional Paytm-specific offers
- Paytm wallet payments sometimes carry extra cashback vs. UPI
Amazon Pay
- Amazon Pay UPI offers occasionally include IRCTC
- Check Amazon Pay offers tab before booking
IRCTC iMudra Wallet
IRCTC has its own digital wallet called iMudra. It's sometimes worth using:
- Faster checkout (no OTP required for wallet payments)
- Occasional offers for wallet users (₹20-50 cashback)
- Load money via net banking or UPI
The convenience is the main benefit — if you book frequently, wallet payments are significantly faster than entering card details or waiting for UPI confirmations each time.
Seasonal and Festival Offers
IRCTC runs special promotions during:
- Diwali: Cashback offers, reward points multiplier
- Independence Day / Republic Day: Patriotic-themed offers, sometimes discounts on specific routes
- Summer holidays: Family travel promotions
- Holi: Regional route promotions
These are typically advertised on the IRCTC homepage and via email to registered users. Keep notifications on.
IRCTC Loyalty Program
Shubh Yatra
IRCTC has a loyalty program where frequent bookers earn points redeemable against future bookings:- Earn points on every booking
- Redeem for partial ticket payment
- Points have a validity period — use them before expiry
Convenience Fee Savings
IRCTC charges a convenience fee on every booking:
- ₹15 + GST for non-AC classes
- ₹30 + GST for AC classes
How to Avoid or Reduce This
- SBI IRCTC card: Waives the fee
- iMudra wallet: Sometimes offers fee waiver
- Book at the counter: No convenience fee (but you lose the comfort of online booking)
- Some promotional periods waive the fee entirely
Over the course of a year, if you book 10-12 train journeys, the convenience fees add up to ₹300-400. Not huge, but worth eliminating if easy to do.
Third-Party Booking Platforms
Several apps and platforms offer train booking alongside IRCTC:
- Paytm: Own railway booking section with Paytm-specific offers
- MakeMyTrip: Occasionally has train booking offers bundled with hotel bookings
- Goibibo: Similar bundle offers
- Cleartrip: Train booking with wallet offers
Caution: Third-party platforms may charge their own service fee on top of IRCTC's convenience fee. Check the total amount before confirming. Sometimes the "offer" is negated by the extra fee.
For pure price comparison and to check which trains run on your route, use IndianRail.app — it's free and gives you clean information without upsells.
Credit Card EMI Options
For expensive bookings (1A long-distance, group bookings, or multiple tickets):
- IRCTC supports EMI options on select credit cards
- 3-month no-cost EMI is sometimes available
- Check during payment — the EMI option appears if your card is eligible
This doesn't save money directly but makes large bookings more manageable.
Group Booking Discounts
If you're booking for a group (wedding party, school trip, corporate outing):
- Groups of 6+ may get favorable allocation from group quota
- Corporate tie-ups with IRCTC can provide discounts
- Contact the IRCTC Group Booking office for large groups (20+)
How to Stay Updated on Offers
- IRCTC email newsletters: Enable marketing emails in your IRCTC account settings
- IRCTC social media: Follow @IRCTCofficial on Twitter/X for offer announcements
- UPI app notifications: Enable IRCTC-related notifications in your UPI app
- SBI website: Check the offers section if you're an SBI cardholder
- Deal websites: Platforms like Cashkaro, Coupons Dunia sometimes list IRCTC offers
My Booking Strategy
Here's what I do for maximum savings:
- Search for trains on IndianRail.app — find the best option
- Open IRCTC for booking
- Before payment, open Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm — check which has the best IRCTC cashback offer
- If SBI card has a running offer, compare with UPI cashback
- Pay using whichever method gives the highest return
- Booking + cashback typically saves ₹50-150 per transaction
The Honest Truth
Train ticket discounts are rarely massive. Unlike flights or hotels, train fares are mostly regulated by the government, and the "discounts" come as cashback or rewards points rather than actual fare reductions. But for frequent travelers, these small savings compound meaningfully over time.
The biggest real savings come from booking early (base fare vs. tatkal), choosing the right class, and using concessions if eligible. Payment offers are the cherry on top.
