Tirupati (TPTY) Station — Guide for Temple Visitors
Guide to Tirupati station — Tirumala temple access, 5 platforms, darshan tips, transport to hilltop, food, and essential pilgrim information.
Tirupati — station code TPTY — is the rail gateway to the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, the most visited religious site in the world. The temple, perched atop Tirumala Hills at 3,200 feet, draws an average of 60,000–80,000 pilgrims daily. Nearly all of them pass through Tirupati town, and a huge number arrive by train.
TPTY is a well-organized station in southern Andhra Pradesh, about 22 km from the hilltop temple. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) trust runs an efficient transport system from Tirupati to Tirumala, so the connection from train to temple is smooth once you know the system.

TPTY has 5 platforms.

- Walking (on foot): Two walking paths — Alipiri footpath (9 km) and Srivari Mettu (5 km). Many devotees walk as an act of devotion. Steps are well-maintained with rest areas.

Important: Renigunta Junction
Many trains that serve Tirupati actually stop at Renigunta Junction (RU), 10 km away, rather than coming into TPTY itself. Check your ticket — if it says RU, you need to take a local train or auto from Renigunta to Tirupati.Darshan Planning
The most important thing about visiting Tirumala is planning your darshan (temple visit):
Free darshan (Sarva Darshan): No ticket needed. Queue times: 2–12 hours depending on day and season. Weekdays are shorter. Weekends and festivals can mean 8+ hours. ₹300 Special Entry Darshan (SED): Book online at TTD website (tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in). Fixed time slot, 1–2 hour queue. Book well in advance — slots release 3 months ahead and fill up within days. Break darshan and VIP darshan: For TTD accommodation holders and special categories.Facilities

Tip 1: Book your Special Entry Darshan ticket online, months in advance. The ₹300 SED is the only practical way to avoid multi-hour queues. The TTD website opens slots 3 months ahead, and popular dates sell out in minutes. Tip 2: If you're doing Sarva Darshan (free), arrive on a weekday. Tuesday and Wednesday typically have shorter queues. Saturday, Sunday, and especially festivals (Brahmotsavam in September-October) mean 6–12 hour waits. Tip 3: No bags, phones, or cameras inside the temple. Free locker/bag storage is available near the temple entrance on Tirumala. Leave everything except essentials. Tip 4: Hair offering (tonsure) is done at the Kalyana Katta on Tirumala. It's organized and free. Over 50,000 heads are tonsured daily. Tip 5: Laddu prasadam is available for purchase after darshan. Each person can buy 2 laddus (₹50 for 2). These are the famous Tirumala laddus and they're genuinely delicious.Track your train on IndianRail.app — Chennai and Bangalore trains to Tirupati are heavily booked, so monitor availability early.
