Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal — commonly called SMVB or Baiyappanahalli Terminal — is Bengaluru's newest railway station. Opened in 2023, it was built to ease the pressure on KSR Bengaluru City (SBC) and provide a modern, well-connected terminal on the eastern side of the city.

Named after the legendary engineer Sir M Visvesvaraya (the man behind the Krishna Raja Sagara dam and much of modern Karnataka's infrastructure), the station represents a new generation of Indian railway terminals — cleaner, more organized, and designed with modern passenger flow in mind.

Why SMVB Matters

Bengaluru City (SBC) station sits in the congested Majestic area, and the city's rapid growth has outpaced the station's capacity. SMVB was built to:

  • Absorb overflow trains from SBC, especially long-distance services
  • Serve East Bengaluru, which has grown massively (Whitefield, Marathahalli, Indiranagar)
  • Connect directly to Namma Metro — the Purple Line has a station at Baiyappanahalli
Several trains that previously originated at SBC now start from SMVB, including some services to Chennai, Howrah, and North Indian destinations.

Station Layout

SMVB has 7 platforms. It's a terminus — all trains start and end here.

PlatformsServices
1–3Premium and long-distance trains
4–5Express services
6–7Regional and intercity trains
The station building is modern with a wide concourse, good lighting, and clear signage. It feels noticeably different from older Indian stations.

Getting To and From SMVB

By Metro

Baiyappanahalli Metro Station (Purple Line terminus) is directly adjacent to the railway terminal. This is SMVB's biggest advantage. The metro connects to:
  • MG Road: 15 minutes
  • Majestic (KSR Bengaluru City SBC): 25 minutes
  • Indiranagar: 10 minutes

By Auto/Taxi

  • SMVB to Whitefield: ₹150–200
  • SMVB to MG Road: ₹80–100
  • SMVB to Majestic (SBC): ₹120–150
  • SMVB to Kempegowda Airport: ₹600–800
  • SMVB to Electronic City: ₹350–450

By Bus

BMTC buses on the Old Madras Road connect to various parts of the city.

SMVB vs SBC vs YPR

Bengaluru now has three major stations:

  • KSR Bengaluru City (SBC): Original main station, Majestic area. Most trains.

  • Yeshwanthpur (YPR): Northwest Bengaluru. Some trains to North India and Goa.

  • SMVB (Baiyappanahalli): East Bengaluru. Newest. Growing number of trains.

Always check your station code on the ticket. If it says SMVB or a code starting with "BNC" vicinity, check if it's been shifted to SMVB.

Facilities

Waiting Areas

Modern, air-conditioned waiting halls. Comfortable seating with charging points. Digital display boards throughout. The station was built recently, so everything is in good condition.

Food

  • Station food court: Multiple options including South Indian (idli, dosa, meals), North Indian, and branded outlets (Cafe Coffee Day)
  • Platform stalls: Tea, coffee, light snacks
  • Outside: Old Madras Road has restaurants. The Indiranagar food scene (2 km by metro) is among Bengaluru's best.

WiFi

Free WiFi available.

ATMs

Multiple ATMs in the concourse.

Accessibility

Full accessibility — elevators, escalators, ramps, tactile paths, accessible restrooms. Modern design makes this one of the most accessible stations in India.

Restrooms

Clean, well-maintained. Both free and paid (premium) options. Tip 1: If you live or work in East Bengaluru (Whitefield, Marathahalli, Indiranagar), SMVB is much more convenient than SBC. The Majestic area traffic around SBC can add 30–60 minutes to your journey. Tip 2: The metro connection is the key advantage. Baiyappanahalli is on the Purple Line, giving you direct access to the metro network without dealing with road traffic. Tip 3: SMVB is still ramping up. Not all trains use this station yet. Check whether your specific train originates from SMVB or SBC before heading here. Tip 4: The station is on Old Madras Road, which connects to the Bengaluru-Chennai highway. If you're being dropped off by car, the road approach is straightforward.

Check IndianRail.app for trains originating from SMVB — the list is growing as more services are shifted here.

Nearby Landmarks

SMVB is what happens when you build a railway station from scratch with modern standards. The metro integration, the clean design, and the East Bengaluru location make it a genuine alternative to the Majestic area chaos of SBC. As more trains are shifted here, SMVB will become increasingly important for Bengaluru's rail travelers.
