Shimla station — code SML — is the northern terminus of the Kalka-Shimla Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This isn't just a station; it's a destination in itself. The narrow-gauge "toy train" from Kalka climbs through 102 tunnels, over 800 bridges, and past pine-forested mountains to reach Shimla at 2,075 meters above sea level.

The station sits on Cart Road, the main spine of Shimla, close to the Mall Road, Christ Church, and the Ridge — the heart of this beloved hill station.

The Kalka-Shimla Railway

The railway was built in 1898-1903 and covers 96 km from Kalka (in the plains of Haryana) to Shimla. It's one of three mountain railways in India with UNESCO World Heritage status.

Key facts:
  • Distance: 96 km
  • Time: 5–6 hours (rail car), 6–7 hours (regular train)
  • Stations: 20 en route
  • Highest point: 2,076 meters (near Shimla)
  • Gauge: 2 ft 6 in narrow gauge
  • Tunnels: 102 (longest: Barog tunnel at 1.14 km)

How to Ride

  1. Get to Kalka: Take a train from Delhi, Chandigarh, or Ambala to Kalka Junction (KLK). The Shatabdi from Delhi to Kalka takes about 4 hours.
  2. Board the Kalka-Shimla train at Kalka: Multiple services daily. The rail car (faster, AC) and regular train (slower, more charming) both run.
  3. Enjoy 5–6 hours of mountain scenery: The route winds through tunnels, bridges, and pine forests. Sit on the left side for the best valley views on the ascent.
Booking tip: The Kalka-Shimla trains have limited seats. Book at least 2 weeks in advance, especially during summer (May-June) and Christmas/New Year. Use IRCTC or check availability on IndianRail.app.

Station Layout

Shimla has just 1 platform — it's a terminus. The station building is a charming colonial-era structure that's been maintained in its original character.

The platform is short (narrow gauge), and the trains are small. The entire station has a fairy-tale quality that contrasts sharply with the mega stations elsewhere in India.

Getting To and From Shimla Station

By Foot

The Mall Road, Ridge, and Christ Church are a 10-minute walk uphill from the station. Shimla's core is pedestrian-only — no vehicles allowed on the Mall Road.

By Taxi

Taxis wait outside the station on Cart Road.
  • SML to The Mall Road: Walking distance
  • SML to Kufri: ₹500–700 (16 km)
  • SML to Naldehra: ₹600–800 (22 km)
  • SML to Mashobra: ₹400–500 (12 km)

By Bus

HRTC buses from the nearby bus stand (200 meters) connect to Manali (8 hours), Chandigarh (4 hours), and other Himachal destinations.

Facilities

The station is tiny compared to any plains station. Facilities are modest:

  • Waiting area: Small covered waiting room. No AC (not needed — Shimla is a hill station).
  • Food: A small canteen at the station serving tea, maggi, and snacks. The real food is on the Mall Road — walk 10 minutes up.
  • WiFi: Limited. City WiFi and mobile data work better.
  • ATMs: On Cart Road, outside the station. SBI and UCO Bank.
  • Medical: Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) is 2 km away.
Tip 1: The toy train ride IS the experience. Don't treat it as mere transport — it's a scenic journey. Bring a camera, keep your window open (if not too cold), and enjoy the tunnels, bridges, and mountain views. Tip 2: Summer (May-June) and Christmas-New Year are peak season. Shimla gets extremely crowded. Hotel prices triple, and the toy train sells out weeks ahead. Book everything in advance. Tip 3: Shimla is a walking city. The Mall Road and the core area are vehicle-free zones. Pack walking shoes and light bags. The station is on Cart Road, which is the vehicular road — from there, you walk up to the Mall. Tip 4: The Barog station (en route) has a haunted tunnel legend and decent food. If you're feeling adventurous, break the journey at Barog — there are retiring rooms and a small hotel. Continue to Shimla the next day. Tip 5: Winter (December-February) brings snowfall. The toy train sometimes gets delayed or cancelled due to snow or landslides. Check running status before your journey.

Shimla station is small, charming, and unlike anything else on Indian Railways. The toy train from Kalka is one of the great train journeys in the world — slow, winding, and utterly beautiful. The station itself is just the final stop. The real journey is the ride up the mountain.
