Rani Kamlapati — station code RKMP, formerly Habibganj — made history as India's first fully redeveloped "world-class" railway station when it reopened in 2021. This station in Bhopal set the template for what Indian Railways wants all major stations to eventually become: airport-style passenger flow, escalators and elevators everywhere, air-conditioned waiting areas, commercial zones, and a clean, organized design that feels nothing like the chaotic stations most of us are used to.

If you've never been to a redeveloped Indian railway station, Rani Kamlapati will genuinely surprise you.

What Makes It Different

The traditional Indian railway station model has the main building on one side, with passengers crossing tracks via foot overbridges. Rani Kamlapati flips this by using an elevated concourse that sits above the tracks. You enter at the top, check your platform, and descend to the correct platform via escalators or elevators. This means:

  • No crossing tracks on foot overbridges
  • Airport-style departure boards and wayfinding
  • Retail and food zones in the elevated concourse
  • Separate arrival and departure levels at some points
  • Covered, climate-comfortable platform areas

Station Layout

RKMP has 6 platforms under the elevated concourse.

PlatformsServices
1–2Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, premium trains
3–4Long-distance express
5–6Regional and intercity trains
The main entrance is on the MP Nagar side, accessible from the Habibganj commercial area. There's also access from the other side.

Getting To and From RKMP

By Auto/Taxi

Designated pickup/drop-off zones (similar to airports).
  • RKMP to Upper Lake: ₹40–60
  • RKMP to Bhopal Junction (BPL): ₹80–100 (5 km)
  • RKMP to MP Nagar: Walking distance
  • RKMP to Raja Bhoj Airport: ₹200–250
  • RKMP to Van Vihar National Park: ₹40–60

By Bus

City buses on Hoshangabad Road. BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit) connectivity to other parts of Bhopal.

By Cab

Ola and Uber pickup from the designated area outside the main entrance. Well-organized compared to traditional station frontages.

Rani Kamlapati vs Bhopal Junction

  • Rani Kamlapati (RKMP): New Bhopal, MP Nagar side. Modern, redeveloped. Some premium trains.
  • Bhopal Junction (BPL): Old Bhopal, Hamidia Road side. Traditional. Most trains stop at both.
Many trains stop at both stations, so you can choose whichever is more convenient for your destination in Bhopal. RKMP is better for MP Nagar, DB Mall, and the new city. BPL is better for old Bhopal and Hamidia Road.

Facilities

Waiting Areas

Modern, air-conditioned waiting lounges on the concourse level. A significant upgrade from traditional waiting rooms. Charging stations throughout. The upper-class lounge has comfortable seating and complimentary WiFi.

Food

  • Concourse food court: Multiple branded outlets — Domino's, Haldiram's, local restaurants, juice bars
  • Platform level: Lighter options — tea, coffee, snacks
  • The food court feels more like a mall food court than a station canteen — and that's the entire point of the redevelopment

Commercial Zone

The concourse has retail shops, a pharmacy, and convenience stores. This is new for Indian stations and modeled on airport terminal shopping.

WiFi

Free WiFi available throughout the station. Better quality than typical RailWire setups at traditional stations.

ATMs

Multiple bank ATMs on the concourse level.

Accessibility

This is where the redevelopment really shows:
  • Elevators to every platform — functioning, maintained
  • Escalators — both up and down
  • Tactile paths for visually impaired passengers
  • Wheelchair ramps throughout
  • Accessible restrooms

Restrooms

Clean, well-maintained restrooms on the concourse level. Paid restroom facility (₹10) with premium cleanliness. Free restrooms are also available. Tip 1: Think of it like an airport. Enter the main building, check the departure board, go to the correct platform via escalator/elevator. It's intuitive once you stop expecting traditional station chaos. Tip 2: Arrive via the MP Nagar entrance if you're coming from the new city. The road connectivity here is much better than from the old Habibganj side. Tip 3: Not all trains stop at RKMP. Some still only stop at Bhopal Junction. Check your ticket. Trains that stop at both usually show RKMP as the first/last Bhopal stop. Tip 4: The station has good parking facilities — covered parking for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Rates are reasonable.

What Other Stations Can Learn

Rani Kamlapati proved that Indian railway stations can be redesigned without disrupting train operations. The elevated concourse model, the airport-style flow, and the emphasis on accessibility set a benchmark. The station is now used as a reference model for the ongoing redevelopment of stations across India — including New Delhi, Mumbai CSMT, and others.
