Pune Junction — station code PUNE — is the primary railway station for Maharashtra's second-largest city. Located in the Camp area (Pune Cantonment), it's a manageable 6-platform station that handles a surprisingly large volume of traffic, including the popular Deccan Queen and Shatabdi services to Mumbai.

Pune's IT-driven growth has made this station busier than ever, with frequent trains connecting it to Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and destinations across the Deccan plateau.

Station Layout

PlatformsServices
1Deccan Queen, Shatabdi, Pragati Express (Mumbai services)
2–3Long-distance trains (Delhi, Bengaluru, Howrah)
4–6Intercity, passenger, and regional trains
The main entrance faces the Camp area on Bund Garden Road. A secondary exit on the rear side connects to Sangamwadi area.

Platform 1 is the main platform and handles Pune's flagship trains. If you're catching the Deccan Queen to Mumbai, this is almost certainly where you'll be.

Getting To and From Pune Junction

By Auto/Taxi

Prepaid auto stand is outside the main entrance. Pune autos have historically been notorious for refusing meters, but things have improved. Prepaid or app-based is still recommended.

Typical fares:

  • Pune Station to Shivajinagar: ₹40–60

  • Pune Station to Hinjewadi IT Park: ₹300–400 (cab)

  • Pune Station to Pune Airport: ₹200–300

  • Pune Station to Kothrud: ₹100–140

Ola and Uber work well here. Pickup from the station frontage on Bund Garden Road.

By Bus

PMPML (Pune city buses) stop on Bund Garden Road. The Pune Station bus stop connects to most city routes. Shivajinagar Bus Stand is 2 km away for MSRTC long-distance services.

By Metro

Pune Metro is expanding, and the nearest metro station is within reach of the station area. The Blue Line and Purple Line are operational and expanding coverage across the city.

Pune Junction vs Other Pune Stations

  • Pune Junction (PUNE): Main station, Camp area. Most long-distance trains.
  • Shivajinagar (SVJ): 2 km north. Some trains stop here en route to/from Pune Junction.
  • Khadki (KK): 5 km northwest. A few trains use this station.
  • Lonavala (LNL): Hill station stop on the Mumbai-Pune line, 65 km away.
Always verify PUNE on your ticket.

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

AC waiting room on the first floor near platform 1. Valid ticket required. Decent condition with charging points. Upper-class waiting room available for premium class passengers.

General waiting area on the ground floor — functional, gets crowded during peak hours.

Food

Platform 1 food stalls serve decent vada pav, poha, and misal — this is Pune, after all. A plate of misal pav costs ₹40–60 and is genuinely filling.

The food court in the main building has South Indian and North Indian options. ₹80–120 for a thali.

Outside the station, Camp area has excellent restaurants:

  • Vaishali (FC Road, 3 km): Iconic South Indian breakfast

  • Bedekar Misal (Narayan Peth, 4 km): The misal pav benchmark

  • German Bakery (Koregaon Park, 3 km): Café-style food

Near the station, there are several small eateries on Bund Garden Road.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi. OTP verification. Works across all 6 platforms.

ATMs

SBI and Bank of Maharashtra ATMs inside the station. More ATMs on Bund Garden Road.

Medical

First aid center on platform 1. Sassoon Hospital is 2 km from the station. Tip 1: The Deccan Queen (departing 7:15 AM to Mumbai CSMT) fills up fast. If you're taking this train, arrive by 6:45 AM. The coach positions on platform 1 are well-marked. Tip 2: Pune Junction is compact and easy to navigate. You won't get lost here. The real challenge is getting to and from the station through Pune's traffic. Tip 3: If you're heading to Mumbai for a day trip, the Deccan Queen and Shatabdi are better than driving on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The train takes about 3.5 hours and you avoid the ghats entirely. Tip 4: Pune monsoons (June–September) are heavy. The station area can get waterlogged. The Camp underpass near the station floods regularly. Plan alternate routes.

Check your train's live status on IndianRail.app before heading to the station — Mumbai-Pune trains can face delays during monsoon due to ghat section speed restrictions.

Cloak Room

Platform 1, ground floor. Open 6 AM–10 PM. ₹30 per bag. Valid ticket and X-ray required.
