Patna Junction (PNBE) Station — Gateway to Bihar

Patna Junction — station code PNBE — is Bihar's largest and busiest railway station. Located on the south bank of the Ganges, it's the primary rail gateway for millions of people traveling to and from Bihar. The station sees crushing crowds during festival seasons like Chhath Puja and Diwali, but on regular days, it's a functional station with decent facilities.

PNBE is on the Howrah-Delhi mainline, so most major trains between eastern and northern India stop here.

The main entrance faces Fraser Road (now Beer Chand Patel Marg), one of Patna's central thoroughfares. The rear exit leads toward the Ganga-side area.

Prepaid auto stand outside the main entrance. Patna autos are mostly shared-route, but you can hire exclusively at the prepaid counter.

Patna Junction vs Other Patna Stations

• Patna Junction (PNBE): Main station. Most long-distance trains.
• Rajendra Nagar Terminal (RJPB): 5 km west. Some trains originate/terminate here.
• Danapur (DNR): 10 km west. A few services use this station.
• Patna Sahib (PNSA): 8 km east. Near the Gurudwara.

Check your ticket carefully — PNBE and RJPB are the most commonly confused.

Navigation Tips

Tip 1: Chhath Puja (October-November) turns Patna Junction into absolute mayhem. Millions of Bihari migrants return home for Chhath, and the station operates at many times its capacity. If you're traveling during Chhath, book tickets months in advance and expect delays. Tip 2: PNBE is a junction, so trains pass through from both directions. Confirm your platform and train direction on the electronic boards. Tip 3: The main entrance gets extremely congested. If you can, use the rear exit (south side) for quieter access. The foot overbridges connecting all platforms have recently been improved. Tip 4: Patna summers (May-June) are among the hottest in North India — 45°C+ is common. Platforms have limited shade. Use the AC waiting room and board at the last possible moment.
