Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction — station code DDU, formerly known as Mughal Sarai — is arguably the most important railway junction in all of India. Located 17 km from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, this station sees over 500 train movements per day. The Howrah-Delhi and Howrah-Mumbai trunk routes intersect here, making it the crossroads where eastern, northern, and western India's rail networks converge.

Most passengers don't come to DDU as a destination — they pass through it or change trains here. But if you're making a connection at this station, understanding the layout can save you significant stress.

Why DDU Matters

DDU isn't a city station in the traditional sense. The town around it (Mughalsarai/DDU Nagar) is small. The station is important purely because of its position on the network. If you're traveling from Kolkata to Delhi, Kolkata to Mumbai, or anywhere in the east to the west/north, your train almost certainly passes through DDU.

Many trains that don't stop at Varanasi Junction (BSB) do stop at DDU. So if you're heading to Varanasi and your ticket says DDU, you'll need to take a local auto or bus to cover the 17 km to the city.

Station Layout

DDU has 10 platforms.

PlatformsTypical Traffic
1–3Delhi-bound trains (via Allahabad/Kanpur route)
4–6Howrah-bound and eastward trains
7–8South/west-bound (Mumbai route via Allahabad or Katni)
9–10Passenger and regional trains
The station has two main entry points. Most passengers use the main entrance on the town side.

Getting To and From DDU

To Varanasi

  • Auto: ₹200–300, takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic
  • Local train: Several shuttle trains run between DDU and BSB daily. ₹10–15, takes 25 minutes
  • Bus: UP roadways buses from outside the station

Local Transport

The town around DDU is small. Cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are the main options. Everything in town is within ₹30–50 by auto.

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

AC waiting room on the first floor. Confirmed ticket required. It's functional — not luxurious, but better than sitting on the platform. General waiting hall gets crowded during transit rush.

Food

  • Platform stalls: Chai, samosa, puri-sabzi, litti chokha
  • Food court: Basic North Indian thali ₹60–80
  • The town outside has small dhabas (roadside eateries). Nothing remarkable, but filling and cheap.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi available. OTP verification. Functional coverage.

ATMs

SBI ATM inside the station. Limited options outside.

Medical

First aid center available near platform 1. Tip 1: DDU is a transit junction. If you're changing trains, pay close attention to which platform your connecting train arrives on. The station announcements can be hard to hear over the noise. Tip 2: Many trains stop at DDU for 10–20 minutes (crew change, loco change, etc.). If you want to grab food from the platform stalls, this is your window. Keep an eye on your train — it will leave on time. Tip 3: If your ticket says DDU but you're actually heading to Varanasi, plan for the 17 km transfer. An auto ride costs ₹200–300 and takes about 40 minutes. Don't panic — this is extremely common and autos are always available outside the station. Tip 4: DDU is an important junction for train watchers — you'll see a huge variety of locomotives and rolling stock here. If you're into trains, the platforms are a spectacle.
