Lucknow Charbagh (LKO) Station — Architecture and Guide

Lucknow Charbagh might be the most architecturally stunning railway station in India, and that's not an exaggeration. The station building is a masterpiece of mixed Mughal, Gothic, and Rajput architectural styles, built in 1923, with arched gateways, ornate turrets, and symmetrical domes that make you stop and stare even if you're running late for your train.

Station code LKO, this is the primary station for Uttar Pradesh's capital. It's a major junction on the Northern Railway and handles a massive volume of traffic — both long-distance services and regional trains to all corners of UP.

Station Layout

Charbagh has 9 platforms spread across two levels. The main building is on an elevated road, and the platforms are below at ground level. You descend via stairs, escalators, or elevators from the main concourse to reach the platforms.

The main entrance is on Charbagh Road, facing the gardens (the "char bagh" or four gardens the station is named after). There's a rear entrance on the Station Road side.

Getting To and From Charbagh

By Metro

Lucknow Metro's Red Line has a station at Charbagh. It's directly connected — you can walk from the metro platform to the railway station in under 5 minutes via covered corridors. The metro runs to Munshipulia on one end and the airport on the other. This makes the airport-to-station journey straightforward — ₹60 metro fare, 40 minutes.

By Auto/Taxi

Prepaid auto stand is outside the main entrance. Rates:

• Charbagh to Hazratganj: ₹50–70
• Charbagh to Aminabad: ₹40–60
• Charbagh to Lucknow Airport: ₹300–400 (taxi), or take the metro
• Charbagh to Lucknow Junction (NR): ₹30–40

By Bus

UPSRTC buses stop on Charbagh Road. Major city and intercity routes are covered. The Alambagh bus stand (3 km) handles most long-distance UPSRTC services.

Lucknow Charbagh (LKO) vs Lucknow Junction (LJN)

Lucknow has two main stations right next to each other — almost confusingly close:

• Lucknow Charbagh (LKO): The main station with the grand building. Most long-distance trains.
• Lucknow Junction NR (LJN): Directly adjacent, connected by a foot overbridge. Handles some Northern Railway services.

They share some platforms in practice, and transferring between them takes 5–10 minutes. Still, verify which one your ticket says. Some passengers have walked into the wrong station building and had to double back.

Waiting Rooms

The AC waiting room is on the first floor of the main building — it's actually one of the better waiting rooms in North India. Clean, well-maintained, with proper seating and charging points. Upper-class lounge is in the same area.

The general waiting hall is on the ground floor. It gets packed, especially around festival seasons (Eid, Diwali, Chhath).

Food

Lucknow is a food city, and even the station options reflect Awadhi culinary standards:

• Food court (main concourse): Biryani, kebab rolls, vegetarian thali — ₹80–150
• Platform stalls: Chai, samosa, bread pakora, bun maska
• Outside the station: Tunday Kababi's original branch is in Aminabad (4 km), but there's a branch nearer to Charbagh on Station Road. The galauti kebabs are extraordinary.

If you have a few hours, the street food around Aminabad and Chowk is worth the auto ride. Lucknow's basket chaat and makkhan malai (winter specialty) are not to be missed.

Navigation Tips

Tip 1: The station is on an elevated level. You enter the building at the top, and platforms are below. First-time visitors sometimes don't realize they need to go down to reach the trains. Follow the "Platforms" signage and take the escalators or stairs down. Tip 2: Charbagh gets extremely crowded during Eid, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. Extra trains are added, but the station capacity doesn't change. Arrive 45+ minutes early during festivals. Tip 3: The auto-rickshaw drivers outside Charbagh are known for refusing meters and quoting inflated prices. Use the prepaid booth, or book an app cab from inside the station using WiFi. Tip 4: If you're visiting Lucknow specifically, the station is centrally located. Hazratganj (shopping), Bara Imambara, Rumi Darwaza, and the Residency are all within 5 km.
