Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra — station code SVDK — is the terminus of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link (USBRL), one of India's most ambitious railway projects. This station is the rail gateway for millions of pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine, located in the Trikuta Mountains at an altitude of about 5,200 feet.

The station is relatively new, modern in design, and built specifically to handle pilgrimage traffic. It sits at the base of the hills, about 1 km from the town of Katra and 12 km (by trekking path) from the Vaishno Devi shrine.

Station Layout

SVDK has 4 platforms. It's a terminus station — all trains end here.

The station is modern with good facilities, wide platforms, and clear signage. The design reflects the pilgrimage significance — you'll notice temple-inspired architectural elements.

Getting To and From SVDK

To the Shrine

The Vaishno Devi shrine is 12 km from Katra by trekking path. Options:
  • Trek on foot: Most pilgrims walk. Takes 5–7 hours uphill, 3–4 hours down. The path is well-paved with food stalls, restrooms, and medical posts along the way.
  • Pony/Palki (palanquin): Available for hire from Katra. ₹600–1200 depending on season.
  • Helicopter: Shrines Board operates helicopter service from Katra helipad to Sanjichhat (near the shrine). ₹1700 one way. Book through the Shrine Board website. Fills up fast in peak season.

Local Transport

  • SVDK to Katra town center: ₹20–30 (auto), or 15-minute walk
  • SVDK to Jammu Tawi (JAT): 50 km, about 1.5 hours by road
  • SVDK to Patnitop: 80 km, about 2.5 hours

Yatra Registration

Mandatory: All pilgrims must register with the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board before starting the trek. Registration counters are at the Katra bus stand (1.5 km from station) and online at maavaishnodevi.org. You'll receive a yatra slip with a group number and time slot.

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

AC waiting room available. Modern and clean — this is a new station. General waiting area also well-maintained.

Food

  • Station stalls: Pure vegetarian — samosa, chole bhature, rajma-chawal, chai
  • Katra town: Dozens of restaurants catering to pilgrims. Vaishno Bhojanalaya and similar pure-veg eateries line the main road. ₹60–100 for a thali.
  • On the trek: Food stalls every 1–2 km on the pilgrimage route. Dal-rice, maggi, chai, biscuits. Prices increase with altitude.
  • Note: Katra and the shrine area are completely vegetarian. No non-veg food is available.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi available at the station.

ATMs

SBI and J&K Bank ATMs near the station. Also available in Katra town.

Medical

First aid at the station. Medical posts are stationed along the entire trek route. Tip 1: Register for the yatra online before arriving. The Shrine Board website (maavaishnodevi.org) allows advance registration. This saves time — the on-ground registration queue can be 1–2 hours during peak season. Tip 2: Peak pilgrimage season is Navratri (March-April and September-October). The shrine gets 30,000–50,000 visitors per day during Navratri. Expect long queues for darshan (2–6 hours). Off-season (January-February, monsoon) is much quieter. Tip 3: Start the trek early morning (2–4 AM) to avoid daytime heat (summer) or to reach the shrine for morning darshan. Carry a flashlight/phone torch. The path is lit but a personal light helps. Tip 4: The Vande Bharat Express from Delhi to Katra has made this journey much more comfortable. It takes about 8 hours compared to 12+ hours for older trains. Book well in advance — it's extremely popular. Tip 5: Pack light. You're going to trek 12 km uphill. Anything beyond a small backpack will be a burden. Cloak rooms at the station and in Katra town can store your main luggage.

Check train status on IndianRail.app before heading out — especially for winter services when fog delays are common on the Delhi-Jammu route.

Cloak Room

Available at the station. Also, the Shrine Board runs luggage storage facilities in Katra town near the registration counter.
