Kanpur Central — station code CNB — is one of the most important junctions on Indian Railways' trunk routes. Sitting on the Howrah-Delhi mainline, nearly every major train between eastern and northern India passes through here. The station handles around 350 trains daily, making it one of the top 10 busiest stations in the country by train movements.

The station is located in central Kanpur, near the commercial hub of The Mall Road. It's not a glamorous station by any means, but it's an essential transit point that millions of passengers pass through each year.

Station Layout

Kanpur Central has 10 platforms.

PlatformsServices
1–3Premium trains, Rajdhani, Shatabdi passing through
4–7Long-distance mail/express (Howrah-Delhi trunk route)
8–10Regional and branch line trains
The main entrance faces The Mall Road. There's a rear entrance on the GT Road side, near platforms 8–10.

The station is a junction, not a terminus — trains pass through from both directions. Make sure you know which direction your train is arriving from so you can position yourself on the correct side of the platform.

Getting To and From Kanpur Central

By Auto/Taxi

Prepaid auto stand outside the main entrance. Kanpur autos mostly use shared routes, but you can hire a dedicated auto at the prepaid booth.

Typical rates:

  • CNB to IIT Kanpur: ₹200–250

  • CNB to Kanpur Anwarganj (KNW): ₹30–50

  • CNB to Bus Stand (Jhakarkatti): ₹40–60

  • CNB to Phool Bagh: ₹30–40

By City Bus

City buses stop on The Mall Road. Limited coverage compared to metros, but functional for major routes.

By Cab

Ola and Uber have limited but growing presence. Auto-rickshaws remain the most reliable option.

Kanpur Central vs Kanpur Anwarganj

  • Kanpur Central (CNB): Main station. Nearly all long-distance trains stop here.
  • Kanpur Anwarganj (KNW): 2 km away. Some branch line and passenger trains use this station.
If your ticket says CNB, you want Central. KNW is a smaller, less busy station.

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

AC waiting room on the first floor. Valid same-day ticket required. It's reasonably maintained. Upper-class waiting room exists for 2AC/1AC passengers.

General waiting hall on the ground floor — large, noisy, and perpetually crowded.

Food

Station food options:
  • Food court (main concourse): North Indian thali ₹80–100, biryani ₹100–120
  • Platform stalls: Chai, samosa, bread pakora, cold drinks
  • IRCTC vending machines: Platforms 1 and 4
Outside, The Mall Road has better options. Birhana Road (2 km) has Kanpur's famous sweets and chaat. Thaggu Ke Laddu is a Kanpur institution — despite the name ("thug's sweets"), they're excellent.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi available. OTP-based access. Coverage is decent on platforms 1–6, weaker on the outer platforms.

ATMs

SBI and Canara Bank ATMs inside the station. More ATMs on The Mall Road.

Medical

First aid center near platform 1. Hallet Hospital is 2 km away. Tip 1: Kanpur Central is a passing-through station for most trains. Your train might stop for only 5–10 minutes. Be on the platform and ready to board at least 15 minutes before scheduled arrival. Tip 2: Platform changes happen here. The electronic boards update, but sometimes late. Check IndianRail.app for real-time platform assignments. Tip 3: The station gets very crowded during Diwali, Chhath, and Holi travel rushes. Kanpur is a major transit point for passengers heading to eastern UP and Bihar — extra trains and unreserved coaches are packed beyond capacity during festivals. Tip 4: The main entrance area (The Mall Road side) has better security and lighting than the rear entrance. For late-night arrivals, exit from the main side. Tip 5: If you have a long layover, The Mall Road area has cinema halls, shopping, and restaurants within 1 km. Walking distance from the station.

Cloak Room

Ground floor, near platform 1. Open 5 AM–11 PM. ₹30 per bag. Ticket and X-ray scan required.
