Jammu Tawi — station code JAT — is the southernmost major railway station in Jammu & Kashmir and has historically been the "gateway to Kashmir." For decades, this was the end of the railway line — travelers would arrive here and continue by road over the Jawahar Tunnel to Srinagar. The USBRL project has extended the line further north to Katra and eventually to Srinagar, but JAT remains the most connected and busiest station in the region.

The station sits on the banks of the Tawi River, in the heart of Jammu city. It's well-connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and most major Indian cities via the Northern Railway.

Station Layout

JAT has 6 platforms.

PlatformsServices
1–2Rajdhani, Duronto, premium trains to Delhi
3–4Long-distance express (Mumbai, Howrah, Chennai routes)
5–6Regional and Jammu-area trains
Main entrance faces BC Road, one of Jammu's main commercial streets.

Getting To and From JAT

By Auto/Taxi

Prepaid auto and taxi stand outside the main entrance.
  • JAT to Jammu Bus Stand (General Bus Stand): ₹30–50
  • JAT to Katra (Vaishno Devi): ₹600–800 (50 km by road), or take a train to SVDK
  • JAT to Jammu Airport: ₹150–200
  • JAT to Patnitop: ₹1200–1500 (112 km)
  • JAT to Srinagar: By road only — 300 km, 8–10 hours. Shared cabs and JKSRTC buses from Jammu Bus Stand.

By Bus

J&K SRTC buses from the General Bus Stand (2 km) connect to Srinagar, Katra, Patnitop, and Kishtwar. Deluxe buses to Srinagar take 8–10 hours via the Jawahar Tunnel.

By Train to Katra

Trains now run from JAT to Katra (SVDK), 50 km, about 1 hour. This is the easiest way to reach Vaishno Devi if you're coming via Jammu.

Medical

First aid on platform 1. Government Medical College hospital is 3 km away. Tip 1: If you're heading to Kashmir (Srinagar), the road from Jammu is the most common route. JKSRTC deluxe buses (₹500–800) and shared Sumo taxis (₹600–800 per person) leave from the General Bus Stand. The journey takes 8–10 hours and passes through the Jawahar Tunnel. Start early morning to arrive by evening. Tip 2: The Jammu-Srinagar highway is landslide-prone during monsoon (July-August). Road closures are common. Check highway status before planning your journey. Tip 3: For Vaishno Devi, take the train to Katra (SVDK) rather than going by road from Jammu. It's faster and more comfortable. Tip 4: Jammu Tawi trains from Delhi can face significant delays during winter fog (December-January) — sometimes 6–8 hours late. Check IndianRail.app for real-time status. Tip 5: Jammu city itself has several temples worth visiting — Raghunath Temple, Bahu Fort, Mahamaya Temple. The city is the winter capital of J&K and has a distinctly different culture from Srinagar.

Cloak Room

Near platform 1. Open 5 AM–11 PM. ₹30 per bag.
